With winter taking its grip it's reaching the time where i have very few days when I can get out on my motorbike to take some photos. So my reason for this post is I am looking for ideas of photography things I can do when the weathers bad and it's not suitable for the bike. I haven't used my camera due to having hit a flat spot and some other things getting in the way namely a bad back. I have decided that next year I'd love to take part in the 52's so if any one has any inspirational ideas that can help me to get out and use the cameras again when weather allows and things I can do when I can't, I will be very grateful.

Still lives (or is it lifes?) and macro were my plans for last year but I was much better than I thought I would be so managed to keep more active. My back isn't perfect so I've tried to keep kit down and tend to use a compact more than most of my other stuff. If I do go the SLR route, I may well just take a single lens with me but Nod's law states that I will want a different one!

I haven't tried many still life things yet, I am lucky that my back is all better now but when I do go out on the bike I am limited as to what kit I can carry as I haven't sorted out my top box yet. So I have to rely on my tank bag at the moment.

I find that I'm at the short end of my kit most of the time, so a single body with a 24-70/24-105 or similar would be the tools of choice should I be taking the SLR kit out. Pretty sure that would fit in a tankbag! If I think I'll be wanting a greater range, I may well take my superzoom bridge with me instead of the SLR kit - quality is a little compromised but that gives me the reach that a 24-720 set of lenses would. MUCH lighter though.

What can you achieve within walking distance of your house? I'd always discounted my local park as a bit of a boring, uninteresting park but they ran a photography completion so I challenged myself to enter it. I was surprised that once I started looking there was plenty to photograph. If you look hard enough you can always find things around you to take photos of, it doesn't need to be a stunning landscape in the lake district.

Not normally popular when I suggest it but think again about Still Life.
You can arrange the objects to give good composition, choose the colours to create harmony or to clash. Move everything around so that the light is from a different direction, diffuse the light, reflect the light. Try different focal lengths at the same, and different, distances. Underexpose, overexpose by different amounts to see the effect. Experiment with different apertures for DoF. Change the ISO to use small apertures at shutter speeds where you can hand hold the camera without shake, check the amount of noise when using high ISO etc.
While doing all that you do not have to worry that the subject is moving, or will disappear.
It really is worthwhile because once you have the subject set up you are no longer worried about getting a good/great picture, it is all about playing and learning.

when faced with this dilemma I got into night time photography - star trails, light painting, car trails. Sometimes I just go into town and take pics of the pretty lights. In the winter the 'bulb' setting is your friend :) I've also started learning to use my flash - gave up smoking and used the money I saved to buy some diffusers, so now I can try some table-top stuff. Still life can be great fun.

Also, the 52s is an excellent way to get your mojo back

My lenses are very limited I have two identical 18-55 ( one came with my 600d ) the other I bought for my 400d and I have my tamron 70-300. I also have three Manual focus only lenses one off which is a 50mm lens.

Yes I am looking forward to getting involved with next years 52's need to find the thread to see what I have to do for it. I also fancy having ago at star trails and light painting but I have no idea on where to begin.

There are plenty tutorial videos on youtube regarding light trails and light painting - and loads more besides...

No reason why you have to wait for the 52 challenge to officially start - why not look through the words they used this year and pick some and see what you come up with till 2014 starts....

That's a brilliant idea I might give that a go
