Hi guys, I am new to here, but plan to spend quite a lot of time reading through your threads. I must say this forum is phenomenal.

At the moment I am looking for a photography related present to my friend who is a very keen advanced but amateur photographer. I don't mean an educational book, rather something collectible. I was thinking about a new book on Vivien Maier maybe? I watched a prog about her recently.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks.

You said collectable not classy :)

Look great Simonblue. Adding it to my list of variants. Thanks.

I'd highly recommend the Annie Leibowitz book 'At work'. If it's a good photography related book you're after, I did a post recently where I asked some successful photographers what their book recommendations were, so hopefully you can find something 'classy' there!

For some reasons I cant open the link you sent. Internet works well and all other sites open. The link doesnt. Is it a correct link? Thanks.

Two recent books that stand out are:
  • The Road to Seeing by Dan Winters
  • 50 Portraits by Gregory Heisler
There have been a few threads on favorite/inspirational photographers. Starting with the names listed on these and searching for retrospectives or specific publications would be a good place to start.

What are they interested in? - portrait, landscape, wildlife, sport, industrial?

Something like Each a Glimpse by Colin Gifford contains some stunning photography but it wouldn't be of interest to everyone.

Alastair, thanks a lot! I would look through everything you've mentioned. My friend is mostly interested in landscapes and street photography I would say..

Does he have First Light by Joe Cornish? A very good book of Gallery is also good and comes signed if bought from the website. Anything by Sebastio Salgado is also a good bet as may be Nick Brandt's photography books on Africa. Also Magnum contact sheets?

Thanks Nguss! All the advice is great. I am going to make a list and then check with him what he's got.

Up to £100.

What about a twin lens reflex camera similar to the one that Vivian Maier used? An actual Rolleiflex would be out of budget, but there are other brands that you could get for about £100 that produce very good results (e.g., Minolta Autocord, Rolleicord, etc.). For instance, London Camera Exchange has an MPP Microcord for £99:

Seems classy and collectable to me.

That's a cool idea, but my friend lives in Turkey. I am not sure it will ever arrive there safely. Hence I thought of a book.
