Well I've had my camera since August after wanting one for a while and in the 8 months I have had it I have used it a couple of times.

I have currently got it for sale on eBay but Im not sure if I'm doing the right thing as I don't really get to use it because of my working hours. So im going to ask were do you get your motivation from and how do you keep being enthusiastic about it?

My motivation comes from a number of places. I try to buy at least one magazine a month, look through the photo critic section on here and have a browse through flickr every once in a while. I normally find one or two photos or techniques that spark a little interest or creativity. I use them as a starting point and see if I can come up with something similar. This often leads to my own ideas.

I think the best way is to just go out and take some photos. Sometimes you end up with a card full of pictures you aren't happy with, but occasionally there will be one or two that put a smile on your face. Get a few of them and your off :)

I think sometimes we all go through spells when we can't be bothered but eventually the urge does come back.

Good luck.

Try one of the 52/365 projects in the challenges/inspiration section http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=33

:plusone:

I got my first DSLR in September and snapped a few bits here and there towards the end of the year. But this year I'm doing a 365 and it's really making me think about photography and see shots all around me.

Why not try one starting tomorrow? It doesn't have to be just January to December! Of course out of 365 days there'll be a few which are average or below average (I have a few already! ) but you'll also get some really good shots and think more about what you're taking.

I'm loving mine ... so far!

mate, unless you could do with the money at the moment - don't sell it.

i get really frustrated at not taking enough pics, i take my camera bag to work every day of the week 'just in case' i see something - most of the time i do see something but never stop and snap it - so that's my own fault. but i'm always looking at other people's work, thinking of shots that i'd like to get, or things i'd like to try - i could probably take a month of work and there still wouldn't be enough time to do everything on my 'to do' list.

all i can say is just snap away as much as you can - at home, just take pics of everything and you will still learn i promise you.

As an amateur, you need to photograph things that you enjoy - for me, that's sports, cityscapes and portraits particularly. A couple of months ago, I went out and took a few photos of my favourite view in London - a view I see every day - and I had great fun doing it.

I also work strange / long hours, so I just use my camera when I can - if it's at night, so be it.

Work out what you enjoy in life, and how you could photograph it. Everyone goes through some rough patches.

I work shifts but that actually helps with my photography because I can get out whenever the weather is in my favour. I find landscapes hard to get because you have to travel further afield each time to get new images. I like wildlife but knowing where to go can play a big part in capturing something unusual. Studio work is a no no because of the added expense. I'm not sure the wife would appreciate me ogling naked women either. :) I'm not really into photographing sports either so that's out. I would like to have a go at street but I'm a bit shy that way. I do want to give it a try though and will. Back in the old days I enjoyed developing and similarly I enjoy the digital dark room and therein lies my motivation, for if I don't go out and shoot things I don't have anything to process. That's when I get cranky.:) I try to get out and shoot something, anything, at least once every couple of weeks and process so that I can share. I take my gear with me almost everywhere including work just incase. People will smirk, but I do like to hear, "nice shot", "like #2", or "your horizon needs straightened", not.:D Photography takes me places that I wouldn't necessarily go to and fills my free time. Otherwise I'd be sitting here on the computer wasting my time talking rubbish. :suspect:;)

Back to you, the question was asked earlier. Why did you buy a camera? Whatever that reason was, follow it to its conclusion and show it to the rest of us.

Richard you wanted a camera for so long, why now are you not taking images? What did you want the camera for in the first place? what was the drive?

What are you interested in?

Trains/planes and automobiles?
Wildlife?
Women?
Art?
Architecture?
People?

Thanks guys, well I like cars and its not that i need the money i would like another set of wheels and camera would boost the funds lol.

At the time my car was getting featured in 2 magazines and I was in awe of the photographer how he mad everything seem so simple and the quality of the pictures we amazing.
Since then though I have fell out of love with cars even though I would never be able to get rid of them, the enthusiasm for the camera has gone out of the window.

I cant use that as an excuse though as some people work shifts and there pictures are amazing. I think its a confidence thing or the fact that I feel a bit of a loon pulling this massive camera out and taking pictures of random things when out on my own.

I dont want to get rid of it but I dont want it to go to waste but i suppose there is only me that can do something about that isnt there.

Im going to take it to work today and even though there isnt anything by my work take a couple of pics. Thanks for the inspiration guys :)
