Every time I'm in the supermarket I'll have a quick look at the magazines and see what's there. And every so often, once in a blue moon I'll buy one. I'll take it home, open it up, flick through, put it down again...and that's it. It goes to the bottom of the draw while I find something more interesting to read.

It's not that there's anything really wrong with them, but most of them seem to be focused towards beginners.

Is there anything with a little more depth to it. Maybe even with more niche styles of photography (boat on a beach can get a bit old after a while). I just want to read something interesting, with meaningful articles, and original images.

I'm sure out of the average supermarket bunch some fit the bill better than others (I buy them so rarely I've not quite figured them out yet), but I bet there's some really good mags you never see in the supermarkets too.

Any suggestions welcome.

I buy Photoplus (Canon Edition) most months, and Amateur Photograper if the content has something of interest.

I bought three, Digital SLR, Digital Camera and Digital Photo, to look at and pick the one I want to stick with. A few months later and I'm still buying all three every month... oops

Save yourself some money, and save the world some trees; just read what you want online rather than paying to read stuff you don't want in a mag.

haha, I spent 10 years of my old job spending half my waking hours staring at a laptop screen, and even now that I don't work in IT anymore, I still spend a sizeable chunk of my spare time sat in front of a computer (sad, i know).

I actually enjoy looking through a good old fashioned paper magazine. Every topic is a surprise because I haven't had to look for it in google, and the topics are, quite a lot of the time, things i wouldn't otherwise have looked for.

After many years of magazine buying, AP is the only one I subscribe to these days, although I sometimes but others if there's an article of interest inside (or a decent freebie on the cover!) While it's true that there are a lot of adverts in AP, I rather like the fact that you can get a reasonable idea as to what you can expect to pay for a bit of kit and also see what's available these days.

+1 for BJP

British Journal of Photography might fit the bill for you. Never got into it myself, but it's not for beginners thats for sure.

I've had a flick through in Smiths before, and yeah, it looks very good. I think I must have been put off by the price or something, or perhaps I was buying something else at the time. That type of stuff I like though.

Amateur Photographer is one I've picked up relatively often but find it thin on content between all the adverts. Which I wouldn't mind, but I can't afford new kit.

And I guess this is one of the problems with many of the mainstream mags. After some simplistic articles explaining shutter speeds, followed by a load of adverts and reviews on equipment I can't afford, there's not a lot left to hold my interest.

Black and White Photography is very good (as long as you like B&W :))

I only ever tried one mag,'DSLR jockstrap'

Guess what it was full of:)

British Journal of Photography might fit the bill.
Recommended if you want to see what's going on in the world of photography in a cultural sense, and I consider it good value. Available in many newsagents' including WH Smith for £7, monthly. Useless if you want to see how-to articles or to ogle endless pictures of camera gear, though it does carry a few quite penetrating reviews.

Outdoor Photography is pretty good and you can get a 1 year sub for £16 of Clubcard vouchers vs £30 to £35 normally: http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/product.aspx?R=3653

Of all the mags OP is the only one that I buy regularly. It looks great in the shop but then when I get it home I think...."why did I fork out for this?" Having said that the same thing will probably happen next month as well.

In the most recent ish the star letter (which wins a shoulder bag) was from a bloke who

a) compliments the editor on various features of the mag. (Always a good idea)

then b) goes on to describe seeing some fieldfares on September 2nd when in fact they are autumn migrants. He includes a photograph to prove his point. Only trouble is, it shows a mistle thrush...:bonk:

BJP and Black and White Photography are the two i regularly pickup. Other than that there is a trader in the local market selling old editions of others for 70p each so i'll get a few of anything that looks interesting from them.

Try joining your local camera club. If it's anything like mine, it will be awash with magazines which get circulated around after the original owners have read them.
