I subscribe to three magazines and have done for about three/four years. On top of this I buy the odd extra magazines which catches my eye when in the paper shop.

At In Focus I make a habit of buying up all the older/cheaper copies of magazines I don't already have.

So you are beginning to get this view of me, surrounded by magazines!

It doesn't take long for the reviews to be out of date when new stuff comes along. So I had this revelation! Cut the magazines up and put in folders the various aspects that are still of interest to me.

1. Photography skills
2. PS training
3. Locations
4. Anything else I can think of

Everything else goes in the bin!

This means one of my spare rooms will have a book shelf that can be taken over by one of my other hobbies! Classic Minis, Motorhomes, Land Rover Discovery III!

Has anyone else tried to do this and if so were there any down sides or is it all as positive as it seems?

Some photography magazines are now available in electronic format. One of them (I think Digital SLR User) now offers all new subscribers to the paper version a free copy of the electronic version.

I subscribe to PC Magazine (American version as UK one no longer available) in electronic format.

Whilst I like looking at the sites on the pc, I also get a lot of pleasure out of reading. At the moment I seem to have so many magazines and can recall an article that interested me but would have to search for a looooong time.

So I reckon putting these articles in a folder should be a good way of searching.

To start will be a bit of a chore, but I reckon once I get up to speed I will be able to cut up each magazine once I have read it, or perhaps once it is 3 months old and the ads are out of date.

I subscribed to the Digital Photo magazine. I got the April issue delivered in February! They are starting to take up a lot of room now though
 
Read it, remember it, throw it away ;-)
 
I save all my Digital Photo magazines. I started at issue 41. When I run out of room I just put up a new shelf. I love re-reading them, and they keep me happy when the weather is too bad to go out. The only thing I notice though is how many times the same technique and subject is repeated.
 
I recently threw away a years worth of Practical Photography and quite a few DSLR Users. Looking through they seem to go in a cycle, most things are covered at least once a year so it seems pointless hanging onto them, particuarly if I've since learned the technique described.

Still yet to read a really interesting take on motorsport photography, saying that. Basic panning seems to get covered yearly, but nothing different/interesting, which is odd considering how many hundreds of people have cameras at a given motorsport event.

For sure they seem to repeat themselves but usually with a different slant.

As someone who is not a full time photographer and has many other pastimes I find that remembering everything is very difficult. For sure, once you have done a major photographic event then it will sink in.

With magazines of 6 months old I find over half are full of adverts that are of no use and reviews of cameras that do not interest me anymore. Reviews of lens's, flash, bags and similar can be quite useful to keep.

Well, reckon I will start next week and see how I get on!

Like to say it will be fun and in some ways finding articles I forgot about will be fun. But the labour could become a bit boring!

Somebody gave away a years worth of old photography mag on my local free cycle board. They guy was overwhelmed by interest. So if anyone has any old mags this may be an alternative to binning them?
 
I have a big pile of Photography mags, donated by two forum members.
I've made my way through most of em :D (Took a while!), and will be passing them on to a forum member. Watch this space.
 
Interesting thought, give them away!

I have just started going through them and have been amazed that I have stuff going back to 2003. In the main they are going in the junk pile with a few being torn up to keep articles as mentioned.

Interestingly enough the ones I will keep are the ones I did not think much of in the early days! Like 'The British Journal of Photography' and 'digital photo art'. Maybe it shows my photographic tastes are growing up and I am leaving the run of the mill stuff behind!

ps only a fraction of the way through and the pile is already over 2 feet high!
 
I have a bunch of my mags but, a short while ago, I bought a ring binder an some of those clear hole-punched wallets that go into them.

I then went thru my mags, cut out any articles or tutorials etc that I thought I may use, popped them into the sleeves and then into the binder, then threw the mags out.

Hey presto! No more mags laying around...

That's exactly what I am doing. Glad someone else has gone through it and I am not as mad as I thought I may have been! If you see what I mean?

How old were you mags? Seems to me that the stuff I am coming across of about 2 - 3 years old is either out of date because it is Photoshop or I have seen a better article in a newer magazine!

One magazine I won't be bothering with anymore is Photography Monthly which has gone right downhill since they restyled it last year.
 
I am still quite happy with it. Three I subscribe to are:

Photography Monthly
Digital Camera
Digital SLR User

What surprised me is how bad they all were a few years ago!

A friend of mine works as a transcriber for Guitarist magazine. Adrian had loads of magazines and articles that he wanted to get rid of. He got a scanner and scanned them all onto his PC. Most are filed onto DVD`s now.

And then got rid of the magazines. Took him a while though!

Well, I only got into DSLR type photography in Dec 06. As such, none of my mags are much older than a year.

Mind you, you do have a point. Oh how things change eh?
 
The only problem with going through them and cutting out the interesting bits is that you will have no time to take photos. It's amazing how all the articles suddenly become interesting and you just have to read them. It's like when someone else is reading a newspaper and you cant resist reading it over their shoulder!!

How true :lol:

I am a slow but methodical learner and do like to study a bit before trying things out. One of the things that has amazed me over the last couple of weeks going over my last years subscriptions is how much useful information I found.

Conversely the pile of magazines I went through this morning were awful but probably good for a few years ago.

Interesting idea to scan and put on a DVD. Only problem with that one is I am bound to never look at them again! At least with hard copy I can pick it up when I go to bed.
