Hello,

I usually treat myself to a photography magazine every month. I tend to choose one based on the features in that months magazine. I would however like to subscribe to one as it seems to save a fair amount of money.

I am umming and arring about which one. I tend to usually end up with Practical Photography or (can't remember the other name, maybe Digital Photographer or something)

Can anyone recommend which magazines they prefer? I would ideally like one that provides good mini assignments to do, tips on certain aspects and definitely tips on post processing. I am not keen on magazines that show endless pages of readers pictures, although I know most magazines will have this feature.

Any help is appreciated. :clap::cuckoo::bonk:

I've just subscribed to digital photo magazine, based mainly on their disc tutorials, for me I found them the best, plus their critique was pretty spot on IMO. - www.photoanswers.co.uk

I think the same crowd also have something to do with practical photography :)

around £14 a quarter, and the mag is £4.99 a month... plus you get a free 5 way reflector :)

I've kind of settled on Digital Camera as it has quite a bit of useful content and the articles & 'how to' bits are well written. Wish I'd subscribed when they were offering the monopod as the free gift. I'm less tempted now it's a reflector.

Sorry to change the subject slightly. But how do you use a reflector if you are on your own?

Do you just have to try and hold it with a free arm? Or maybe balance it somewhere?

I subscribe to Digital Camera magazine, but it's going the way of Practical Photography and Photography Monthly (which I dont see much of in the shops nowadays), in that its getting very samey, it's all "Do super things with your DSLR every month, and it's not teaching me anything new).

I may cancel the subscription, and take up Professional Photographer or Digital Photo (which is more Photoshop based stuff).

I believe that Professional Photographer and Photography Monthly are offering a subscription with a free Lowepro bag, at Focus on Imaging (if you pay by direct debit). It says the Lowepro bag is "Worth over £95", so its probably a filter wallet or something :D (Hope its a decent bag though, because I'm sorely tempted).

I live in Cyprus at the moment, so the choice is limited, plus we only get them mid way through the month, and we have to pay an extra pound or so on the price, however, I alsways get Practical Photography and Digital Photo. Should really think about subscribing, probably a lot cheaper and more punctual!!

I am a magazine addict! I just devour them ... but I have yet to decide on my favourite. I have also been trying to narrow it down so I can take out a subscription and try to wean myself away from from weekly activity of loitering in newsagents ...

Well I have subscribed for Practical Photography. Just over £10 a quarter by DD plus I get that reflector, woohoo! :p

I am only about 8 months into being interested in photography, and I don't get out much anyway, so it is probably more like 4 months, so am still very much a beginner, so I think this mag will suit me. Thanks for help everyone.

I like Digital camera,
Still no subscription yet wish i had done with the monopod.
Oh latest offer is a lowepro nova 2 bag.
I find that any magazine bird watching mags photomags etc allways repeat there stuff after a year.

Like jmghart I'm a magazine addict. I currently get PhotoPlus, Digital Photo and Pratical Photography.

I like each magazine for a variety of reasons. PhotoPlus is great as it is dedicated to Canon. DigitalPhoto has some excellent tutorials and the videos are really good. Practical Photography I like simply because I enjoy reading it. Although DP and PP are from the same team, they have different things each month.

I signed up on the 3 issues for £3 for each of these magazines. I will probably take out a full subscription once that deal is over.

Yes, they put a voucher in the last issue of professional photography, but they don't say what the bag is. You have to subscribe for 2 years though.

I got my Lowepro Mini Trekker AW from Practical photography on a 2 year sub.

I subscribe to Digital Photo magazine as i find like others their tutorials are pretty darn good. I will however buy a different magazine on the odd occasion if it has a feature i think will be particularly interesting.

a few tips on the free gift when subscribing. If you already have the gift on offer (or have no need for it) call their subscription hotline, they normally have a few other products they can offer. Also if you have subscribed for over 12 months, give them a call and you can normally claim another free gift, if not cancel and sign up again.

Not that i like shamelessly like a freebie or anything! ;)

Same here!

I tend to get quite a few. I really do like DSLR Photography though. It`s not an old publication, I think they`ve only just passed the first anniversary. It`s got a good balance. I`m not overly keen on the ones that are 50% photography and 50% Photoshop.

Hi Squirrel,

Yep, in the seventies, eighties, and nineties I did that too: treat myself to a nice, glossy photo magazine every month.

But then I started to find that there were fewer and fewer times that I read stuff in there that was new to me. They seemed to be 'recycling' old subjects, issues, and titbits more and more often. And the internet settled that completely. Everything in the mags had already been covered exhaustively months earlier on the WWW. The glossy photo mags didn't add anything to my knowledge anymore. I didn't learn anything new from them anymore. So buying them (or subscribing to them), and reading them, was really a waste of time and money. Which is why I haven't bought, or subscribed to, any glossy photo mags anymore in the last decade.

And saved a bundle in time and money!

Have fun!

Thanks peeps, ive been meaning to get a magazine subscription for ages and always forget to do it.

I like Pratical Photoagraphy & Digital Photo, and have just signed up for PP. I may do DP as well, but same free gift so ill wait and see if it changes beforehand hehe.

I subscribed to DSLR User - mainly for the free Crumpler bag, but I actually really like the magazine too, it isnt so big on the tutorials (but still seeems to have 3 or 4 an issue) but is generally just a good read.

I get Digital Camera each month, more often than not also Digital Photo and also subscribe to PP and Photography Monthly. Then of course if any other mag looks interesting that month I'll buy that too. Spend a blooming fortune on them I do.

Been buying Practical Photography for nearly 2 years straight, fancy a change as a lot of the 'projects' that they run in each issue don't really inspire me at all.

Had a flick through 'Outdoor Photography' recently and it looks promising - think I'll buy this next month

For me it all depends on whats on the cover; reviews, tutorials, etc.
I like digital photo & practical photography but being only monthly I have to get a weekly fix from amature photographer too. :help:

Has Photography Monthly improved? I bought a couple of issues when it first came out but found it very much a beginners' rag.

Tried Outdoor Photography but found the sort of images it promoted very chocolate-boxy and formulaic.

The best photo magazines I have ever bought for the quality of the images were a selection of imported magazines supplied by the Falsten Partnership who no longer deal in photo mags. The Leica magazine, Aperture, a special on the work of Steve Curry and a couple of other mags. Dunno what it is about them but I go back time and again to look at the images, whereas I find those in the usual monthlies all a bit ho-hum.

I subscribe to Digital Photo, but end up buying just about all of them. Then I stupidly buy the same one again cos I get confused about which i've already bought.
My wife thinks I'm mental. Thinking about it, she may be correct. Just looked at the piles of mags. Value = nice lens.

i subscribed to pratical photography and recieved a lowepro as the present

Used to buy pretty much all mags for the first 6 months but now find them cover each others content, so now down to the odd one or two a month. Depends what the cover says.

I also feel I'm outgrowing most of the content.

Cheers, Mark

digi camera is good but don't be swayed by the gift. i did it when the monopod was on offer. 2 months later and well after they had taken there money i still hadn't received it so I emailed them, took 3 weeks for them to respond to me only to tell me they had run out so i couldnt have it and not replacement would be offered... so go for the mag not the gift...

I usually pick up either Digital Photography or Pratical Photography if I feel like it at the time. :)

In a similar vein, I was in WHSmiths today and there was an 'Ultimate guide to Digital Photography' for £8 done by PC Pro I think. It looked quite good (from the quick flick through of it), with a lot info on all aspects of shooting and post processing. Anyone bought it?

Ditto to all above :)

I subscribe to AP (short read and a tad pricey but always something interesting), Digital Photo (enjoy the Photoshop tutorials but never quite get around to trying them and got the 5 way reflector) and Digital Camera (got my most used Lowepro bag with that). If I go shopping with my wife I tend to pick something else up from the magazine stand. Don't mind a bit of What Digital Camera now and again for a quiet weekend read.

I'm just a magazine whore :)

I`ve just binned a load of them today, I hate to think what I could`ve bought with the money!

Digital Camera for information on equipment and camera techniques (occasional store purchase when I want to see kit reviews).
Digital Photo for photographic technique and processing of images (subscription).

I've had Digital Photo magazine since the first issue, but decided to cancel in December. However my son in law sent me a suscription to it for Christmas so I have got it for another year. I think it's a very good magazine but it's starting to get very repetitive now. I might just as well re-read the old magazines - which incidentally I keep. The shelves are getting a bit strained now I'm afraid.

If you are thinking of subscribing and don't know a lot about Photoshop I can thoroughly recommend it.

I have subs to both Photography monthly and Practical Photography, the quality of them seems to vary month by month to be honest! If pushed I'd say I prefer Practical Photography out of the two.

I still learn bits and pieces from them but am getting to the stage where there seems to be a lot of repetition. I still enjoy looking at the photos for inspiration though.

In fact, its possible I'm becoming a magazine addict, I went and bought Digital Photo as well this month...
