Photography Magazines...

If you're a beginner and can afford to, I would suggest you bought a small selection for a short while to see which you like. I get Amateur Photographer most weeks (with or without free gift!) and often buy Practical Photography and Photography Monthly. If any of the others has something on the cover that grabs my eye (like a review on kit I'm considering or a technique I'm interested in) then I'll probably get that, likewise with cover gifts (but not disks).
 
DSLR User and Photoplus (for canon) and the odd extra one when im doing the shopping.

I've always found that funny(for Canon users) I've yet to find the one for Nikon/Sony/Olympus Users, I fear they don't exist:bang:

I used to buy Amateur Photographer, But found they repeated alot of the tech stuff, also they do alot of testing, which is good, but, if your not interested in what they're testing and it takes up 10 pages it becomes boring week on week.

I probably buy the 2 "pro" mags every month without fail, not because I've got aspirations of becoming a pro but, because i find them a good read.:shrug:
 
Really difficult to find a decent photography magazine nowadays, most are about as interesting as computer mags (and not a lot of difference) :shake:

I do buy 'Black & White Photography from time to time, this I find to be informative with the emphasis on Photography.

Unfortunately the emphasis in most mags is not how to take good photographs in the first place, but how to bodge up dodgy photographs taken by photographers with no idea of composition, depth of field or the basics of photography.

I have a quick browse through the displays if I'm catching a train/plane, or I'm bored waiting for my wife in shops, and buy one or two if there's anything I'm particularly inerested in. I don't bother otherwise. Most of what I want to read is on the internet and in forums.
 
When I first started, I bought a variety of different ones to see which I liked best.
I tried Outdoor Photography, Digital SLR User, Amateur Photography, Photography Monthly, PhotoPlus, Practical Photography and possibly some others that I've forgotten.

The best ones I found were Practical Photography and Photography Monthly and these are the ones I still read. I've read more of PP than PM lately as I got a trial subscription to PP for a few months to get a free reflector (it's now ended).

If you're interested in competitions, Practical Photography and Amateur Photography do ones each month which then add up for their "Photographer of the Year" award (although I think they've both stopped the open-for-all stage now and they're concentrating on the people who've qualified for the next round(s). They should both start again in January I think.)
 
I'm quite liking Photoplus at the moment. Bought Photopromagazine last month which was an interesting insight to the pro world.
 
I only tend to buy Amateur Photographer these days. I got fed up with all the 'Take Your Best Ever Landscape / People / whatever' articles in all the others. I also pick up some of the arty photography ones if I'm ever in Borders, as they focus more on photography and photographers than cameras.
 
I get Practical Photography each month and occasionally digital photo plus any others that take my fancy with free cd or something.
 
I have a photo magazine addiction it seems. My view is - having bought so many that I could have bought a lens with the money I've spent - that they are really mostly the same. They generally seem to work on pretty much the same calendar-based themes with a bit of recycling of material from one year to the next. Indeed some different titles are actually published by the same publishing house and so you see the same pics cropping up in articles in apparently rival titles.

And yet, I keep buying them. The one thing I would say is that the number of titles is such that they give out pretty decent 'gifts' in return for the price of an annual subscription. So I'd say go for the one with the best introductory gift. You can never have too many camera bags . . .
 
I have digital photographer on subscription as a present. I like the mag as it's a good mix between good amateur and pro articles, plus good photoshop tutorials.
Excellant quality paper it's printed on as well.
 
I had to ween myself off the photography magazines. I was buying every one I could find at one stage, seemed a good way to learn at first but it started getting silly - I'd be adding £20 or so to the shopping bill every month and tbh I wasn't picking much up from them after a while. It seemed as if they were just recycling the same old articles and nothing new was being offered. If I tot up what I've spent last year in mags I'd probably be half way to a new lens...

In the end I subscribed to EOS Magazine, which is quite good provided you use Canon of course, not much use to Nikon and the others though! I also liked Professional Photographer but haven't had it for a while.
 
Buy AP weekly and generally Photography Monthly with an occasional dabble in most of the others if there is something of interest to me within the covers... :D


Used to get five or six or more a month a while back and was disappointed with the repeated images and articles... :shrug: ... and the huge cost when added up annually... :eek:

I have been buying Digital Photo for a couple of years but like all the mags it's fallen into the tap of regurgitating articles. I don't know how many times I've seen 'Get the best from B&W', 'Take Better Portraits', 'Improve Your Landscapes' and so on.

I expect I'll soon stop buying it.

In my opinion you will learn more from this web site, than a years supply of all the mags out there. In addition there are some cracking photo's in the many Galleries on display. Still buy the occasional one, but would rather log on to Talk Photography and read the wealth of tips and info on a daily basis.
