Photography Magazines ... How Many, How Often

Subscribe to Outdoor Photography and BBC Wildlife Mag (although not a photo mag it is relevant to nature photography). Occaisionally buy Practial Photography but not that often as it always seems to cover the same ground.
 
I get Black & White Photography, to keep up on what Ailsa and crew are up to. The issues I'm in are free. ;) It's an excellent magazine, and not so ridiculously heavy on the advertisements.

I buy Practical Photography and Digital Photo,but i think i
will be stoping them as others have said they are starting to repete themselves. Both good mags but they do pile up.:)
 
I've never bought one :shrug: ... though I have a feeling that might change today :lol:
 
Nah, can't be bothered to buy any at the moment.

I've learned and Improved my skill off forums, looking at other peoples pictures and talking to people through MSN mostly. Also just played around with Photoshop CS2 as well.
 
What was a nice surprise about subscribing to B & W Photography are the clean covers - just the title (small) and that's that - none of the what's inside stuff.
 
I never buy any of them. Since I started with digital photography I've maybe bought 3 assorted issues (that's just 3 magazines in quite a few years!) and not been impressed with any of them. I'd rather read a book :)
 
I used to subscribe to practical photography but didn't renew because its like a broken record after a year, I always buy outdoor photography and sometimes by pro photographer, If I'm bored and passing the shop ill often buy a camera mag but find I don't read them all as intently as I could.
 
magazines i buy every month
-motorsport magazine (some of the old photography is lovely and evocative, as is the 'parting shot' at the back

motorsport news (gotta compare my rallyshots to the printed ones!)


if you notice non of them are photography magazines, i used to but amateur photographer every week but gradually i started realising that all i ever read were the questions and answers and roger hicks, the gear reviews seemed to stale and not very informative and i didnt like the writing style or the fact that the readers gallerys didnt inspire me to take photos but mearly made me think "i see photos hundreds of times better on the internet every day"

so yeh this is my magazine
 
I think there is huge value to some mags, inspriation on occasions maybe?, it also offers a good opportunity as a challenge - Can I get published ? Admittedly the copy can be a bit repetitive over time, but PP looks like they have just refreshed their design for example. A worthwhile purchase every now and then in my opinion.
 
I used to subscribe to Photography Monthly, Digital Photographer and Practical Photography but have stopped all subscriptions this year due to the cost involved and have thrown out all but about 4.

Now I only buy and keep a magazine if there is something of real interest to me in there. I find this not only cuts down on the cost but also on the number of repetitive articles.
 
I never buy any...............................I just wait for Minimeezes' cast-offs :wave:

Must admit I'am with Petemc on this one. They do all seem to just recycle ideas, But saying that I still buy Practical Photograpyhy and Photography monthly every month then hardly read them! Where do they live.... in a big disorganised pile at the side of my bed!
 
Far too many far too often and always find it difficult to throw anything away ... :shrug:


Have now stopped the buying and just stick with AP that Jill (:love:) subscribed me to for Chrissy last year ... these go in the re-cycling after a couple of weeks unless there is something specific I want to keep ... :D

I subscribed to Practical Photography for a year from 2005 to 2006. It is a good magazine, but you only really need to read it for a year maximum, as they just recycle the same articles after that.

It helped me a lot when I was starting, but now I don't buy any mags. I kept the old magazines for reference, but, when we last moved house, I cut out all of the interesting articles and chucked the rest away. All I have left is a thin file with some decent tutorials in it, and another section with nice photos for inspiration!
 
Up till about 3 months ago I use to by about 1-2 a month, mainly Professional photographer, or digital photo pro.

About 3 months ago, I got fed up with the same content in them all the time, and so I decided to save the money I would save the money I was spending on magazines, and save it (and add a little on top) and buy books instead. My first batch of 3 books are arriving this week.

Actually it looks rather interesting. A while back I posted on the forum here asking if anyone knew of an equivalent at present to the erstwhile Falsten Partnership, a UK-based company which imported a wide selection of international art photography magazines. Using their site, you could either subscribe to the titles they carried or order your selection of choice of back issues from across the range. A very good way of trying out the Leica magazine, Paris Photo or Aperture without risking the cost of sub if you decided you didn't like it.

I find I keep going back to the images in those magazines. Some of the "high art" stuff just looked like dodgy snaps at first glance (they weren't, of course) but they were infinitely more interesting than endless long-exposure shots of sea swashing over rocks at sunset/rise and chocolate box landscapes.

Falsten stopped doing photo mags at least 4 years ago, which is a real shame.
 
Digging up an oldish thread but seeing as quite a few get Practical photography or digital photo they are giving away an Arctic Butterfly SL700 with subscriptions, if you already have a subscription providing it has run its minimum term you can cancel and resubscribe taken advantage of any fresh offers annually.

I've never got this one before, you say it's getting very samey but if not previously read would you recommend it? I tend to flick through them in the shop and end up with practical photography that I've been buying on and off for many years but fancy a change.
 
I get Digital Photo magazine most months and find it very useful for Photoshop/Elements information. The CD is very good most months and you can learn a lot from it - well I do anyway...... buy it and see, you should be ok with it.
 
the mag is very good and the video tutorials are great.

although i find it samey.....i still spend my hard earned on it each month
