Yes
... And do you keep them?

Just read CT's thread about where you keep your gear and it it kind of brought me to this one as space is becoming a bit of an issue for me.

This month so far Ive bought 3 photography magazines, I have my eye on another one ... and I keep them all as a reference library.

Lately though, I find Im not really reading them thoroughly despite shelling out the £££'s to pay for them.
Im also running out of space to keep them.

How many magazines do you buy per month? do you think theyre worth the amount you spend? do you keep them and if so, how often do you reread the old ones?

I normally only buy a magazine or two a month otherwise I just build up a massive collection & can never find what I'm looking for anyway - I always keep my eyes on what people say about the contents of each mag & also get politely mithered by newsletters keeping me up to date on the new & exciting way that you can add a pop art effect to a photo (its in practically every photo mag I own ).
I always reread the old ones though & am still finding useful things in them.

I have 2 on subscription (just for the free gifts)

Use to buy 3 or 4 a month, but kept running out of space, do keep all the CD/DVDs though that come with them.

hardly ever buy one nowadays unless there's something on the cover which particularly appeals. Occasionally buy Amateur Phtographer if I'm looking to buy something, great selection of new and used adverts and there can be some real bargains :)

I used to get 3, which were Practical Photography, Digital camera, and Photography Monthly (all subscribed). I have kept most of them, although I have no idea why as I hardly tend to use them
I now only get Photography Monthly, and again, I tend to flick through it and look at the pictures rather than actually sit down and read it thoroughly. This may be because I haven't really shot much digital stuff lately - it's been mainly film for my course, and I find that the majority of mags are more geared towards digital.

So.... if anyone wants a collection of Practical Photography, Digital Camera and / or Photography Monthly back issues (along with all the unused CD thingies that come with them) give me a shout, otherwise they'll all go in the recycling bin!

Actually, I would be interested in some of them minimeeze.

I am still at the point where every magazine i read makes me go "ohhhhh, thats how you do that"

how much are you looking for them.

All free to a good home as long as you can collect them as I think it'd cost a fortune to post them!

I get Digital Photo magazine every month. I don't tend to keep the magazines but I always keep the cover CD's with the Photoshop tutorials on them. I find them invaluable to refer back to :)

bah alderhot that is londony isnt it.

I live in stoke on trent, will be on cornwall in couple of weeks, but that wont help :(

Ah well was a nice thought, hope somebody nearer to you can benefit

I buy 2 or 3 a month, they always end up lying around, especially in the bathroom and the mrs always griefs me for it

Only started subscribing a few months ago, and as we have a loft piled high with copies of motorsport dating back to the 1960's I figured it was my turn to add to the firehazard :cuckoo:

So, DigitalPhoto, because their ps tutorials are good, and DigitalPhotographer because their articles are very readable and informative and the interviews usually quite good.

I have a monthly subscription to Digital Photo and a weekly subscription to Amateur Photographer. I have a quarterly subscription to a freelance photogrphers mag (name of which i cant quite remember - FPME or something) and get the EOS magazine as a 'freebie'.

Space is becomming a real issue and i've decided not to renew the Digital Photo subscription and will need to start culling the AP stock :)

Once in a blue moon I'll buy one, if there's supposed to be something interesting in it or with it. But to be honest I find most magazine reviews and articles to be superficial and often as not written by people that obviously know little about the subject they are writing about.

At first I went silly and bought loads of different magazines but have now restricted myself to just one and that is Practical Photography.

Out of the ones I bought initially it seemed to be the one that was consistently useful and had good features.

Everything else I try and pick up on here, a lot of the tuturials are great and its realtime feedback on photos that you take.

Andrea

I keep buying them all in the hope of finding one to be more useful than the others. I tell myself I'll then take out a subscription.
However, Im such a tart, I just find I just cant commit, as each month I end up buying a different variety.
Theres so damn many now too!

Mind you I have bought Digital Photographer for 2 months on the run ... think thats about as loyal as I get!

I subscribe to talk|photography and I keep it on the internet. It has a news section, tutorials, critiques, and is pretty good for providing help and assistance to its readers.

Only buy printed magazines when I happen to be in somewhere like WH Smith's, which is not that often, and see something which takes my interest. I then add them to the top of the five foot pile of old Mac magazines (which does not include ones in boxes).

Michael.

I don't get much time to read them, other than when travelling etc. One magazine though that I've recently subscribed to is 'Hot Shoe' - a nice little A5 full colur bi-monthly magazine - http://www.hotshoeinternational.com - It has a good balence between high-art work, current exhibitons, editorial and reviews. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but less 'exclusive' to me than mags like Aperture, et al

Professional Photographer is the only one I buy monthly. All the others seem to recycle ideas. How to shoot landscapes, or portraits, or magazine front covers that sell magazines.

My fella buys every computer magazine in print and practically cries if I mention throwing any out, even 2 year old ones! Yet it's still me that does all software, hardware and peripheral installing.:bat:
I decided not to collect photography magazines else we'd need to buy a bigger house! So I rely on the Net for my reading material.

I used to buy about 10 -12 a year but as the years go on you come to realise that most of the stuff about technique and competitions etc is just repeated year after year. I now only buy them when looking for reviews on new bits of kit and then getting a good deal on them in the classified section!!!

I've bought a few, but now I feel like most of the stuff I read in them is mostly entertainment. I don't think it's improving my photography - I just like reading them! Sometimes it's interesting to read the C&C that the editors give people's images, but in most magazines I find them very harsh and a lot quicker to criticise than praise.

I have subscriptions to Digital Photo and Practical Photography and occasionally buy others as I see something which interests me.

I do keep them but rather than keeping a whole stack of mags I have a lever-arch file separated into sections (Gear reviews, photoshop technique, shooting technique etc etc) and I rip out stuff that looks useful and keep it in there. Actually, I wonder if I have a macro lens comparison in there somewhere.....

digital photo delivered, depending on cover will depend on what i buy if im out!

I subscribe to talk|photography and I keep it on the internet. It has a news section, tutorials, critiques, and is pretty good for providing help and assistance to its readers.

Me too, as well as Eos-Forums, POTN, photographers.co.uk and ephotozine.

Don't do paper stuff too well, other than Supermoto/Mountain Bike Mags.

Carl.

i'm starting to get a bit bored with the paper mags, they all seem to cover the same topics at the same time !!!

I normally buy practical photography and digital camera most months, or the odd copy of professional photographer when im around smiths. To be honest im also getting to the stage where im seeing lots of the same things again and again int he mags. Im fast starting to think I may be better off just sticking to the t'internet and forums like this one

I buy too many each month. :(

There's alway something in each mag of interest, it just depends how much stuff of interest that is in each mag, as I generally read the ones I get from cover to cover.

I don't think I could subscribe to one or particular mag, as it varies each month which is the most interesting and value for money for me.

I was replying to another thread a couple of months ago on another site, and I suddenly thought how many photo mags there are on sale in the UK? So I made a list, and I couldn't believe how many there were. 16  And that is if I haven't missed any.

They are, for anyone who's interested:
Amateur Photographer
Black & White Photography
British Journal of Photography
Digital Camera Magazine
Digital Camera Shopper
Digital Photographer
Digital Photo
Digital SLR Photographer
Digital SLR User
Outdoor Photography
Photography Monthly
Practical Photography
Pro Photo Magazine
Professional Photographer
What Digital Camera
Which Digital Camera

I worked out that I have at one time or another bought 11 out of 16. :embarrassed:

I don't even want to work out how much I've spent on mags, the amount on cameras and bits and pieces is bad enough. :shake:

I keep all the mags, and the camera mag pile replaces the PC mag piles, which replaced the Video game mag piles, which replaced the .... Well, you get the pictures. ;)

I think that amount of magazines on sale shows how healthy the camera market is in the UK to sustain so many mags at one time.

Digital Photo on subscription here. I keep the tutorials in a file (and the cds) and then junk the rest. Its starting to get repetitive but, at least for now, its a useful resource. And I think some of the tutorials are excellent - I've learned a lot about PP and Photoshop from them

AP on subscription.
Digital Camera from the supermarket most months.

Ephotozine on the net.

From the list compiled by Red I have, at one time or another, bought 7/16.

i've started getting Practical Photgraphy, theres some good stuff in there, and the reviews are quite informative.

Professional Photographer is the only one I buy monthly. All the others seem to recycle ideas. How to shoot landscapes, or portraits, or magazine front covers that sell magazines.

:agree:

I went through a period of time buying two or three a month... every time I walked into Borders I came out with one. In the end I bought a couple of half decent books which seem to cover everything. I totted up the last 12 months spending on mags and could have bought some good kit instead!
Now I get Professional Photographer only as I like the way they cover the business side of things.

I get outdoor photography most months as they have some interesting features in there and the magazine is reasonably priced compared to a lot of others at £3.50.

I also occasionally buy the British Journal of Photography as that has some really interesting articles about the photographers and the photography world.

Digital Camera can be good for a bit of inspiration, they do seem to cover subjects in a way that other magazines don't and with a little more depth than just skimming the surface like many others.

I'm finding myself buying less and less these days as they are very repetitive and I often find myself flicking through the magazine in the newsagent thinking 'ooo, that looks an interesting article' and then when I read it properly realise that it's largely content-less or just far too simple and basic.

DC Mag and ALWAYS Practical Photography - both good IMHO.

We have a local mag called the pix magazine but it has been going south fast.

Oh and never any American mag (MY OPINION - NOTHING ELSE:lol: )
