Hi all,

Just read septembers edition of digital slr photography and it was the first photography magazine I have read, it was ok, so was just wondering what photography magazines people read, which would you say is the best one and or if there's one aimed at more the beginner.

Cheers

I subscribe to EOS-Magazine. Dedicated to Canon equipment. Excellent magazine.

Most of the ones on the supermarket/newsagent shelf are aimed at beginners.

What do you want to read about?

Black and white photography mainly. Sometimes British Journal of Photography if I can find it - my local WH Smith's has reduced the amount of comics on sale by about 75% as it is houses the towns post office so its range of photography titles is now about 2. I might also pick up things like Huck if I'm in an airport or a town with a larger WH Smith's.

Just want to read about photography in general, perhaps one that gives lots of tips, I seem to be watching more YouTube videos on landscape so think that may be my preference.

Flick through and pick the one that interests you the most. You won't gain much by sticking to just one title if you're looking for general tips.

Once you have something specific in mind, you'll probably find that the web/Youtube gives a better and wider selection of tips and advice, but magazines can be good for inspiration.

In my case, in the main I don't. I find some interesting material in Professional Imagemaker (which I've yet to see on sale in a shop), and (rather more specialised) View Camera magazine. In the main magazines are aimed at beginners, equipment oriented and rather dumbed down (in my opinion). When I first started in photography, with zero knowledge, most things went above my head. I doubt that I'd find the same today, as the meat has been replaced with more of a milk diet. A lot of the photography in the magazines I can find in my local newsagents is rather formulaic (which I suppose it has to be, since they give the formula for you to follow :D).

I'd personally recommend saving money and learning the technical basics from a book, and the important stuff from a book on art...

I used to read lloaaddss of them and gave a few big black bags full away.

Not bought one for a while. I tend to buy books now or watch Youtube togging videos :)

Cheers.

F-2 freelance , I think it's the best out there with no adverts every other page and none of the how to shoot a rainbow and 10 steps to becoming a pro sections

Outdoor Photography,it covers what I'm interested in and without all the photoshop tutorial b****x.
I'm not particularly interested in the editorial content of any of them, but as a Photoshop novice, I find the " the photoshop tutorial b****x" very useful, - particularly some of the cover CD's.

I like the content of Professional Photography but it seems to be rarely carried and the price/page-count ratio puts me off. Online I sub to OnLandscape, which is unlike any of the traditional magazines. I keep meaning to pop in to my local library to arrange for a issuu account and free access to a digital copy of Amateur Photographer.

Another shout for Outdoor Photography but you have to be interested in landscape/wildlife/adventure. Most of the beginner mags give daft advice and seem to make out photography is all about selective colour and strange effects. OP is a more serious magazine with excellent real world 'how to' features

I read N-Photo, and subscribe via iPad app. Nikon specific though.

Agree there is far more out there on the net, but I still enjoy the format of a magazine to flick through - and a good source of inspiration.

Considering they give it away as a free pdf, I'm always think f11 is a far more interesting read than most.

If you have a subscription to a magazine you soon find they are very repetitive. However I will sometimes copy some of their projects (eg in practical photographer) just to do something different to what I would usually do. I have found that by doing this I usually learn something, but the learning is in the doing rather than the reading.

Cambridgeshire libraries have AP and Digital Camera free to download and read via Zinio, no doubt other counties offer the same eMagazine service

Also have a stall in our local market that sells out of date magazines for a quid each or 3 for £2.50, bought last months Digital SLR this morning along with Outdoor Photography from a couple of months ago.

Haven't bought a full price magazine for years, got a bit silly now at a fiver or so an issue, all have about 18 months worth of stuff before they repeat

Used to subscribe to AP but now only buy any mag if there's an article or test/review I'm interested in reading.

For me it's AP and Black and White Photography.

I look forward to AP dropping through the letter box on Saturday morning. I've been a subscriber for years and the only thing that has changed for me is that I treat it a bit like a newspaper so I don't keep the issues for very long and eventually they get recycled. At one time I used to keep them all but I just ran out of space and realised that I never actually referred to them, so off they went.

The production standards of Black and White Photography are first class. On the negative side I just don't get a lot of the art school editorial writing. I mean, if you are drawn in by the pictures, who gives a whotsit about the editorial material, subjectively good photographs shouldn't need an explanation in that depth, or is is shallowness? Bit of a rant I now realise.

I might occasionally pick up a copy of 'B+W Photography' if I'm having a mooch in WH Smiths but I don't subscribe to any. I'm more than happy thumbing through f11 each month although more often than not you'll find me with my nose in a photography book rather than a magazine. 'Way beyond Monochrome' is on the coffee table at the moment.

Amateur photographer for me. Gets sent to my house weekly and a great price :)

Outdoor Photography and N Photo here, sometimes Amateur photographer

You know it's time to cancel your subscription when the open the latest mag and think "this looks familiar."
I find some of the cover DVD's (mostly the Photoshop tutorials) very useful, and when I'm browsing I often select a mag for that reason.

Seconded

I don't read photography magazines anymore, apart from anything else there's enough sh1te in our house without adding to it.
Also......they all seem to follow the same narrow beam focus, photography to me is much more than nuts, bolts and editorial formulae.
A few I go to....

Thanks very much:)! I've just subscribed to F11;)!

Right now after not doing much photography for a couple of years I subscribed to Photo Plus a dedicated Canon Magazine.
I find it quite good. The tutorials are a good refresher course.

Cheers

After reading about it on here and viewing the current issue, I decided to subscribe to f11.

I filled out their registration form over 24 hours ago, but I haven't received a confirmation email.
Anyone else subscribed recently?

Thanks for the response.
No - nothing in the "Spam" folder.
I tried again earlier and still nothing.
Those web responses are usually generated automatically - hence the quick reply.
Maybe my ISP is blocked at their end for some reason.
I tried to register on another site last week and it wouldn't accept my email address.
Very puzzling.

Try an alternative e-mail address??

Yes, that may be one answer.
I'll try and contact them first and see if they can offer a reason.
