I am visiting Wigtown at the end of this week for 5 days, looking to try out some land/sea scape techniques with filters for the very first time. Anyone have suggestions of places that have good photo opportunities in the Wigtown / Galloway area
.

It's a lovely place to visit with loads of coastline to explore. It's also an excellent dark sky area for night shots. The church at Sorbie is worth a visit as is Garlieston and Port William. There's loads of places....... You can't really go wrong, just explore. :)

Cheers Splog,

i have been to Garlieston before, if i remember there was a large house and rig bay could be got to through some private garden.
looking forward to the trip and the chance to try landscape photography.

riu,
You could try the following :-
Portpatrick - Lovely Harbour and castle . Some nice coastal walks there as well.
Loch Trool ( Near Glentrool) . Nice to walk around some great scenery.
Carsluith - Has nice salmon nets when the tide is out and the sun is shining .
Killantringan Lighthouse - Near Portpatrick - Lovely long beach etc( when the tide is out). .
Monreith - Great Beach and interesting rock formations .
Hope that helps ...
Rgds Joe .

I have been to Glentrool (without camera), so will visit it this time. Monreith i also have been there with my dogs, parked next to a golf club if i remember. Portpatrick is that going out towards Sandhead and the Mull of Galloway?

A some suggestions slightly east of Wigtown.

The A710 between Dalbeattie and Dumfries gets close to the coast in a number of places.

There is access to the beach via the RSPB reserve at Mersehead (off the A710)

If you are feeling energetic the ascent of Criffel (a 500m hill south of New Abbey) is straightforward and could be a good vantage point for both sunrise and sunset.

However, as said there, are plenty of opportunities around the area. I also suggest getting the relevant OS maps and a copy of the freebie http://stephentrainor.com/tools which is invaluable for knowing where sunset and sunrise will occur.
