I'm going too St. Lucia for wedding for 10 days in just over a wks time... I have been asked to take photos of the wedding as they do not have a photographer for the big day... Ekkkkk!!!

They have seen some photos that I have taken of various people, my little nephew, and general day to day life.. And they thought they were awesome.. But this is someone wedding we are talking about... Id said I would give it ago as it's practice for me and I was going to take my camera away even if it wasn't a wedding.. So them getting someone taking some snaps is a bonus I guess..

What would you say the best approach of doing this would be.... What camera setting do you think I should go for. Any suitable shutter speeds etc etc etc etc etc...

I got a nikon d3000 with a 18 to 55mm lens and a tamron 300mm lens.. I got a tripod.. But Its a toss up between a tripod or extra pair of shoes and a bikini In my suitcase ... Hahaha!!!!!!

The best approach is with running shoes and going in the other direction ;).

I've done a few for friends who asked me to do their wedding photog as a favour after seeing my flickr stream. It's a biiiig favour they are asking as you will not really be in the 'enjoying the celebration' part as you'll be stressing over the shots.

I wouldn't say there was too much technically you should be worrying about - especially if your photos are described by them as awesome. After that the pro wedding photographers earn their crust in the preparation, preparation, preparation and maybe preparation and knowing exactly what shots are needed and when and not looking like a rabbit in headlights and panicking when something goes a bit (or alot) pear shaped. You have a week - ask exactly what the couple want and exactly what the timetable for the whole service, reception and night is going to be (down to 15 min intervals). Also get any 'must have' photo requests from them. It will be a big stress if all they say is "We'll let you do what you want" and come the end they look disappointed that X wasn't done - and it puts a dent in a friendship that takes ages to remove.

Forget the tripod - I think it's a prop to tell the guests who they are meant to look at for the group shots - easily replaced with a firm voice.

If the wedding goes into the night, then the f3.5 of the kit and maximum ISO1600/3200 of the body may be pushed a bit. IIRC the day turns from bright light to inky night in about 15 mins round there - no long drawn out evening dimming. You may want to borrow a f1.4 50mm from someone. Not sure the 300mm will see any use? Maybe look at borrowing a flash with a sto-fen diffuser if night shots will be significant.
In the Caribbean I found a gold lastolite reflector useful for filling portraits when the light was too harsh - not essential but again some friend may be able to lend one?

good luck as well :)

Omg!!!!! Lol.... I have no friends that are into photography so borrowing camera's and lens is not going to happen!!

I know it's going to be a huge task.. And kinda worried about it and I want them to have nice photos.. .. Yeah maybe the 300mm will only work when I'm hiding behind a tree ..panicking!!!!!!!! Argghhhh lol

Thanks for the advice.. Yep I'll leave the tripod at home.. Extra shoes woohhhooo

Wow, that's a big ask of the couple!

Good luck, have you thought of hiring? I would check their insurance covers you internationally first.

best this would be to just point and click take lots if photos and enjoy yourself. don't think about it just take lots of casual shots.

oh and ignore what everyone else says about it

The one thing you should have on your side is the light! Nice and sunny, so no problems with that.

GO to the location the day before at the time of the wedding so you know where the sun will be and what locations will work - take the couple with you if they want a practice as well - will make you all feel more confident about the day.

Do you have a flashgun - a little bit of fill flash could help you out.
And do you have a reflector? A pop up reflector and a willing assistant to help would do the same thing.

Get a list of the shots they want- I'm guessing there is not massive number of guests so that will help you out.

ALso think of shots later inthe day - sunset shots etc etc which will add to it.

Look through HAckers and Spxxx threads of the weddings they have done and see what type of shots you would like to shoot, what poses work etc and you will be fine.

They are not expecting the world, so do what you can, take lots of shots (make sure you have memory and batteries, worth thinking about backing them up too - or maybe getting some printed/copied to disk whilst there?) and have fun!

Thanks guys some good advice all round

Definitely take the bikini instead of the tripod!!!

Lol seriously, a tripod wouldn't be much use as most wedding stuff is hand held and candid...
