Film Drama based on the true-life experiences of four combat photographers capturing the final days of apartheid in South Africa.

The Bang Bang Club is the real life story of a group of four young combat photographers - Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Kevin Carter and Ken Oosterbroek - bonded by friendship and their sense of purpose to tell the truth. They risked their lives to tell the world of the brutality and violence associated with the first free elections in post Apartheid South Africa in the early 90s. This intense political period brought out their best work (two won Pulitzers) but cost them a heavy price.

It is a good film and had a lot of resonance for me. I lived in Joburg when this was happening, and I remember those days quite well.

The film is fairly realistic, and shows - more or less - the way things were. It's not overly dramatised. Greg Marinovich, Alf Kumalo and, I think, Joao Silva acted as consultants.

Kevin Carter won his Pulitzer for the "vulture and child" photograph taken in the Sudan. There was a lot of controversy about it, and Joao Silva - who was also there - gave a different explanation of what happened. Kevin committed suicide shortly after this.

Good film, but I thought it had been out a couple of years now. I downloaded it from iTunes ages ago.

I'm not sure about the vulture photo. I do know there are a few different stories floating round about it, and the NY times ran a note shortly after publishing saying the girl managed to walk away, although her ultimate fate was unknown

Yes, it has been out for a couple of years.

I'd seen it before but I thought I'd flag it up in case anybody who hadn't seen it fancied watching it.
