Hi all,

Im thinking of buying myself one of those close up filters off ebay, it would be great if i could get some do's and dont's of buying from ebay and photography gear. Well my main question is, what is buying from hong kong like because you see these really cheap filters but they are from hong kong ? ? ? finally does this look like a decent filter and does anybody own one that they would recommend for a beginner

Thanks all

Nothing wrong with buying from Hong Kong, but don't expect a cheap magnifying glass to be any substitute for a real macro/micro lens

i bought a close up/macro lens kit for my old fuji finepix and it was good but the down side is that its not a great close up lens. the subject can be in focus but everything else is out of focus.

for instance those pics of the phone i bet aren't taken with that lens. as the entire photo is in focus.

they can give some good effect though.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Mikes-Camera-Accessories I have bought the set of close up lenses twice from this guy now. One set I had for my old Kodak, and now I have a set for my Canon 350D. Although he is in HK (not Scotland like he states) he is pretty quick and reliable, his 100% positive feedback speaks for itself.

I have great fun with my lenses CLICK HERE to give you an idea of the possible results from them ;)

I personally think they are a great (and cheap) bridging product to do close up work with until you're in a position to get a proper macro lens.

I bought my close up filters from seven day shop. They are very cheap ones though only about £3.00 each so I don't expect they are as good as what you can get. They'll do me till I can afford a macro lens though. I got a +1, +2 and +4. They are seven day shops own brand.

That is not a problem with the close up lens but the very shallow depth of field that comes from focusing at a short distance. It would have been the same with a dedicated macro lens.

I have never bought any close up filters from ebay, although I have bought my Minolta lens, my cable release and both my ND and Polariser from the site. Didn't have any trouble with getting them. That might have been a fluke though - nowadays on ebay things aint what they used to be on there...

I've had my fingers burned buying camera kit from ebay and won't be using it again for any purchases. Can't speak for the lenses as I haven't used them, but then I am fortunate enough to own a lovely Sigma macro lens which is superb. Be careful who you buy from on Ebay.:)
