Hi,

I have had my 400d for about 2 months now and getting to grips with the basics.

Looking to do a course that will help me know my camera better and how to use settings to create better pics.

Has anyone done any courses they recommend? and where and what did they involve?

Thanks

Alex

A few here have done the OU photograhy course and seem to think it was worthwhile.

Maybe check out your local colleges as im sure they may run daytime or evening photography courses.

I'm sure your local education authority will offer digital photography courses, ideally, look for DSLR courses and not the Point'n'Shoot type of camera course.

a guy at a place I worked a few years ago studied on a city & guilds course in photography at his local college in the evenings, anybody know what that would be?, I was really impressed by the stuff he was doing (partly what refired my interest in photography). The qualification from the course was good enough for him to get a job as a tog when we got made redundant

I inherited the camera i use and in september decided to get to know it better.............i enrolled at the local adult community college on just a basic "getting to know your camera" course.

Although the majority on the course have just point and shoot cameras there is a couple of us with better. It has refreshed a lot of what i had forgotten from 35mm days and have learnt loads more too.

So even if you find a basic course if the tutor is good he will be able to advise you on your camera and how to start to get the best out of it.

Hope this helps!

Me and a few others on here are doing this one

I reckon its quite good, all home study and assignments are marked by a working pro photographer you get assigned to on joining up

You get a huge folder with information in which contains assignments to carry out, you e-mail them or post them to your tutor and he marks them and offers advice
Some software and a few information sheets as well as being able to get a free press pass to gain entry into restricted events

You basiclly can't fail the course, everything is graded A-F,
F is a fail, but you can re-submit as many times as needed until you get a pass mark

I had a look around and none my local colleges seemed to be doing anything at the right level (only doing the this is a digital camera, point this end to shoot, and here is how to get your pics on the comp type courses).

I am toying with doing the 'Foundation in Photography Course' here - associated with Amateur Photographer magazine. The forum regulars are an unfriendly bunch (unlike this forum) but the course content seems aimed at the right level.

anyone heard of this company and if they are good?

I took the pro course just over a year ago.

While the course is very good and Freddie & his son are a great laugh, I now know that I have learnt just as much from being on these forums.

Try searching for tutorials and info on the net .... Lots cheaper ..

im going to be doing a beginners photography evening course starting in Jan at my local college one of the requirements was to have a D/SLR

I did A level photography as an evening course at my local college. Although it was an A level course, many of the students were absolute beginners at photography, and the course covered all the basics.

M3, I'm another who did the OU Digital Photography Course. It's difficult to 'recommend' a course to anyone without knowing their current level of knowledge and experience.

With it being online, I was not committed to going on one particular evening and as it was a fairly short course, the flexibility really suited me. There are a few threads some time ago regarding the OU course, but to really help us help you, tell us what you are already confident doing.

For example, I was already ok at reasonable composition from studying the magazines and looking through critique pages on this forum, but clueless on post processing.
