I thought it would be nice for all of us who have done a photography course, or are doing a photography course, to write about our experiences here, wether good or bad and how well equipt and stuff

I will start

I study at the Salisbury School Of Art, which is part of Bournemouth University

I am doing a 2 year HND in Photography, with top-up degree year at the end.

The course is very good, very techincal in the first year, very art based in the second - the college use mostly Nikon digital cameras and have 6 D80s and 6 D90s for use by the students

the college also shares a special relationship with Hasselblaid who frequently 'lend' us on a long term basis, various cameras and equipment.

I am currently in my second year - hopefully it will be as exciting as the first!

Does anyone else have any experience to share?

Well I studied quite a while ago but did:

A ND in photoghraphy at Southport technical college as it was called then

Then I did a HND in Photoghraphy in Reading

I worked for Kodak in the evenings doing big prints whilst I was at Reading

After leaving college worked as a freelance assistant in London for around 18 months and did lots of other paid work besides, mostly food/advertising photoghraphy.

Then moved into a full time job doing photoshop manipulation for a creative company, mainly as the travel into London each day and very late night/early mornings was killing me.

And finally started my own web company many years ago

College was great, I met many new friends and learnt a huge amount from some of my tutors, some of whom I still meet up with to this day for beers.

There was no digital cameras when I was studying though, we primarily shot on 5x4 and hassleblad/RB67 for everything else, using a 35mm was virtually unheard of. It must be a damned site cheaper these days as I dread to think how much I shelled out on film and paper over the years though, saying that you learn a huge amount in the processing stage so it's a shame we're losing this. When I was shooting for real clients after leaving college most of the stuff I did was on 10x8. I'm still dreaming of the day when a 10x8 back will come out that's affordable

thanks for your response HairyDuck - we did loads of Medium format, Large format and 35mm printing in the first year - it was all about black and white printing and working with big film cameras :)

so its not lost everywhere - and yes i learnt SO much from the printing process - and yes it was very very expensive

i cant see much future for darkrooms but the knowledge you can learn in them is invaluable for sure

using slide film really helped too :)

Hi i went to night school for two years back in 1997 1998 where i studied 5 modules
The art of black & white photography
Portraiture
Starting photography
Architecture
Exhibition printing

I really enjoyed it, i gained 5 city & guilds and 5 distinctions, i know it was a while ago and very old school.
That's when photographers were photographers :coat: only joking .
I really enjoy digital photography and it would be nice to do a course but at the moment i'am happy teaching myself.

I started an AS level course last month leading on to an A level course next year. Then if i can hold my attention long enough i'll move on to a degree.

I did film photography for years then had a break and got into Digital.
The AS has to be done before the others so i am finding it rather..... ( How do i out this politely?) Borin.... Eas.... Not too taxing!!:D But at least it gets me out of the house one night a week and i'm in a class with like minded people. (And my tutor is rather fit):nono:

I started my first college course a month ago now at wolverhampton for a GCSE in photography. I was thinking it was digital photography but little did i know that we had to start off with film photography.

At the moment were learning about aperture, shutter speed and film speed. Im so confused with it all at the moment but im sure i will get there.

We have got to shoot our first film by thursday in black and white and were gonna develop them this week, so that should be fun seeing how my shots turn out.

My course goes on for a year

Kay you will love it, learning about apertures, shutter speeds and film speeds
seems basic but thats the best way to learn photography, brings back memories of the days coming out of the darkroom stinking of chemicals
good luck with the course.
