i work full time as a support worker and also a have a young boy to take care of and find it difficult to find time to learn more about photography, does anyone know of any courses in the newcastle or surrounding areas preferably evening and partime.

ps..

Not extortionate like £300 for a one day course where you spend more time eating than learning...:nono:

HI - I haven't found any decent information about any around here. However, I think some of the councils lifelong learning courses may include photography but details on the web are sketchy.

A few folks from round here meet up occasionally to take photos (check the meeting place section every so often) and I am sure you could learn by going out for the day with them. I am intending to go along next time there is a meet. I'm not a newbie to photography, but still have loads to learn.

I do know that a local photographer Jason Friend (check on web!) does days out taking photos for £50. I also know he does tutorials. So he might be a good place to start perhaps...

I'd recommend checking out your local 6th form colleges to see if they offer City & Guilds evening courses or your local Adult Education centre for some slightly less formal beginner courses.

Also local Arts Colleges may run courses.

I went on one of those :bonk: Well, £600 for 4 days. Though fortunately talking to the photographer while eating taught me just as much as while we were out and about, and it gave me loads of confidence :D So it all turned out alright :)

Look at your local High Schools, there are loads of courses, they want people to attend so that they can get more grants to run them!
Go to your library and ask as they usually have information.
Local camera club.
I am in Blyth and did 2 Photshop courses for FREE at BRIC, ask around.

ive looked around the colleges and schools and there is nothing... damn hate newcastle never nothing here.. i might move to scotland and do a degree for free... :)

I don't know about the Newcastle area, but I have been to a chap "Brian Smith" who gives a no nonsense approach to studio lighting and ends the day with a little photoshop on the images you have taken.
Real nice chap, also works with his wife Jackie, and they will adhere to what you want to learn.

There's a 54 page booklet with the recent Outdoor Photography mag listing many varied courses throughout the UK - might be worth a look (albeit in WH Smith first).

ive looked in those kind of publications unfortunatly people think that the north east is worth ignoring so all courses are south of yorkshire,...

Does that include the pro togs in the north east ;)

Its up to them to get their bums into gear, what with the recession, it might be worth mentioning to some about starting some courses???

Edit:
If you can get enough people together to make it worth while, Brian Smith may also travel to your location, Link posted earlier on this thread

i will have a look.. i did contact one photographer who offered courses but it was £300 for one day and to be honest i dont think i have £300 to throw away on a course where i probs wont take in, in one day all the info i need to..

if he doesnt come up newcastle, it would be around 300 if i have to get to herts from newcastle for a one day course then pay for petrol and expenses. but thanks for the heads up..

have you been on one of these courses and did you enjoy and learn alot..

I went on a one to one course then attended a group course (with another forum) a few months later.
I enjoyed both visits, and although I'm not new to photography, yes I did learn.

I'm looking at doing one but it's in Exeter so not much help :S this is evening classes and is like 80 quid ?
i haven't looked that closely yet but I am part of the uni photography society so we are trying to barter a bulk discount

Don't know what part of Newcastle you're in but northumberland college do courses at various site or you could try this.

Couldn't some of you Newcastle togs arrange an outing in the area for andiphoto and help him move forward.

hi mate... i have had a look at this, there is no links and most of the courses are out of date ... thanks for trying *** anyways :)

Don't forget the shorter courses run in cycles. If one has already started you can contact the provider to find out when the next one starts.

i was in the same boat, contacted a couple of local Cam clubs, one runs a 10 session course aimed at beginner through to intermediate (includes photoshop lessons). 2 hours every saturday. £2 per session.
might worth emailing around the NE

I'm really interested in something like this, I'm a kinesthetic learner and I find it hard to ttranslate what I read into actions, find this really hard with things like post processing. I've looked and here in Mid Kent the only courses are either commercial ones costing a lot or Adult Ed which only run twice a year. Anyone know of anything similar in the Kent area? I'm not sure if there are clubs that offer beginners courses?

Thanks

I've been quite lucky, I managed to get on the training straight after leaving school, nearly finished my college course now and I can't wait to get into more serious things.

nothing did courses like this when i was finishing school.... and there seems to be notthing around newcastle for photography courses.

i guess there are probably the online courses, but as you said you're not a good reader so these would be no good.

I have some good friends who are genuinely gifted photographers but because they are in different parts of the country its not easy for me to see them work or to pick up tips on the fly.

I've thought about doing weekend courses, I'm a fast learner and with a small group I would probably benefit from something like this, they are blooming expensive though! I'd also like to cover PP so I can make my pics presentable after I've taken them so a course which cover thhat would be ideal. I'm the kind of person who can engage for a whole day but would find going to evening classes for two hours each week a bit annoying.

Damn I think I've talked myself in to spending £350 :/

lol thats one thing i wouldnt do... pay someone 350 to talk about photography but not learn enough to justify the 350 price tag...

im a good reader... i just cant learn from theory just practical... and im a quick learner from the also...

thread cleaned, all talk of andi nicking stuff that he didnt write is now in offtopic.

Good.

Now thats sorted, have you looked at the Northern College of Further Education (NCFE)? They are based in Newcastle so I'd be surprised if some colleges werent using their curriculum.
I'm doing the NCFE1 in photography and it covers everything from camera controls to film and developing, PP, composition and lots more. I'm enjoying it and its 2 hours a week for a school year (30 weeks I think) and it cost me 280 of your earth pounds, bargain.

very cheap! Is that a national qualification or just from that one outlet?

National, I'm doing level2 NCFE in Burton.
