Just wondering if anyone has taken any courses that you could recommend, online or classes.

I'm really just getting started and have read through a good few tutorials but could really do with a bit of direction.

I live in Fife so if anyone knows of anything local, that would be perfect. Would also consider online courses if they come well recommended and there isnt anything local.

Any help or info would be much appreciated

Hi Calum

I too would be interested in learning if people have good feedback from online photography courses. i have been looking around and really finding it difficult to seperate the wheat from the chaff!

I did see some from an outfit called photography made simple. They do absolute beginner one day courses and they do them in interesting places like Chatsworth and Sudeley Castle. £85 for the day usually, including a lunch.

Tom Ang's books on photography are pretty good for beginners. I don't think you can beat getting out there and just taking photos.

I took an ncfe level 2 course at burton upon Trent college which was pretty ok, but there was little guidance and we were set a project and left to get on with it really.

I have been looking at the T189 open university course which is run with online mentors. Anyone done this?

Photography courses are OK, but it's a minefield if you don't get the right one.

A guy I used to work with did a whole 3 years eveing classes at a local tech college. I'm not sure what qualification he got at the end, but he admits himself there are huge gaps still in his understanding. After his first lesson in the darkroom, he was left in charge of future sessions, while the guy who was running the course used to lamb off somewhere.

To this day he doesn't have the confidence to do a wedding and he considers the whole thing was a waste of his time.

There are good courses, but be careful in choosing one, make as many eqyuiries as you can before committing to it.

I have to say though, that if you're self motivated you can gain all the knowledge you need from plenty of sources, including this site - which used wisely is a real fount of information. ;)

Found some reviews of the OU course:

http://www3.open.ac.uk/coursereviews/course.aspx?course=t189

I think the OCA one that a lot of people are doing looks quite good. No idea how they compare cost wise though. The oca one is £600.

The photography made simple people also seem to do offer bespoke tuition - £250 ish per day for up to 4 people.

thanks for the reviews - the OU course is £190 which i think is a bit steep personally for an online course, but as the reviews read, it makes up for it with its flexibility for those who cant get to a college or anything (which sums me up right now)

cheers for the info everyone, been having a look about and found a couple of places local to me, my favorite so far that is what i'm looking for is:

http://www.clearcourses.co.uk/

i think what you said srichards and CT is right though, i just need to get myself out there and get taking pictures, learning the camera and reading tutorials online, then once i at least understand it i can possibly look into doing a class/course to fine tune or learn something more specific

For £76 you can sign up for a 12 week course at Lochgelly High School - Digital Photography for Beginners run by a Pro Photographer who runs a wedding business in Dunfermline. Course is good, focusses mainly on people/posed photography as the tutor's main area of experience is weddings. He is a good teacher and gets round the class well. Learned alot from this last year and enjoyed it soooo much I am going to sign up again! Usually on Monday evening but if demand is high again it will run Thursdays as well.

Sign up now tho, as money is being taken and first to pay guarantees slot on course! Course starts mid February.
