To all budding photographers,

In the next few months we will be launching a Photography competition in partnership with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

The entry period is 4th June to 30th July and voting begins from 31st July to 29th August.

Entrants will be able to upload their photos to the MyMemory site, and the winner will be voted for by the public.

The first prize is an unbelievable trip to Madagascar, where you will be accompanied by a Durrell’s Director of Conservation Management and see first hand some of their vital project work in action. The winner will also receive a Canon 400D Digital SLR Camera, Sandisk 8GB Extreme IV CompactFlash card, as well as Lowepro and Manfrotto equipment.

The runner-up will be treated to a five star weekend in Jersey, courtesy of The Club Hotel & Spa, which will include a tour of Durrell.

What are the T&C's for this competition? I think many of us will be particularly concerned about handing over copyright for free, as is sometimes the case.
Also, what will the theme be? Any particular rules and regs?

Can you give us more info?

Is this attitude not a bit 'precious' Marcel??

Sorry, but I think that I'd be quite happy to concede copyright on one image, if I thought I'd have a chance of winning.

I'm pretty certain you'd still get attribution if you won, or your pic was published.

I'm sorry if this annoys you, but as a happy snapper, who is not dependent on cash generated from my photography, I probably see things different to you.
 
I'm in the Bod camp - photography is not my livelihood, but i want to maintain control of my images and don't enter comps where i kiss goodbye to copyright. Either precious or a control freak - not decided yet ;)

Not at all mate. I'm a happy snapper too :) And I to am not dependant on income from my photography (Which is a good job really because I wouldnt make much :D)

I'm merely curious from a details point of view, of which there arent many on the site. I know some people don't enter competitions where such a clause is included in the T&C's. (The most notorious being the BBC).

i'd like to see the T&C, i cant imagine anything worse than having a shot of mine used all over the place with no credit and no money being given, so id like a little look-see

To be fair to them, it does say on the page that "More details will be release as the competition nears and will be launching officially on Monday 4th June." So presumably it will all be made evident before anyone is asked to submit something.

I've also just seen this in two national mags too. DSLR User and Digital Camera (I think).
 
Point 22 on the T&C

MYMEMORY will only use images entered for publicity or promotional items relating to this competition. Entrants will not lose rights to their images by entering this competition.


Seems a fair trade to me - unlike some other comps which appear often to be a cheap way of getting together some great pics which they (the organiser) can use!

Each Entrant agrees that, by entering, it waives any rights it has which are capable of being waived under the Entrant's local law which relate to competition.

What price do you put on your copyright? Go out and take a photo specifically for the purposes of entering this competition, but then dont enter!

Instead get yourself a hosting package, build yourself a glossy website and then advertise and promote yourself silly, add fancy picture frames and sell that picture. Alternatively, you could add it to that other 7,500 images you have had placed in a stock library for the past 15 years, and hope that one will be picked out and you will get £45 for a half page spread in a magazine.

My point is that competitions are for the most part like marketing. Sure you value your stock photos, and those that you already sell through your website. The thing is that because you value them so dearly, you should never enter them into a competition. Go out and take a new photo and value it at the chance of gaining exposure, or better still winning a half decent prize.

This is what many pro photographers have been doing for years, and through doing this have managed to win contracts or ossignments that they otherwise would never stand a chance of. Some have even achieved fame to some degree. Be assured that you will not get any of these through stock libraries or by selling on Photobox.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that the best contracts and assignments can come through winning competitions which have the BBC, Sony, Canon, Nikon, WWF, and any other array of big name corporations behind it. But even the smaller competitions can offer much in the way of publicity and opportunities... remember the sponsors will be watching at the very least!

At least thats how I see things.
 
Well i entered just for the fun of it, hell if you don't try you can't win right! :)
 
Interesting read this thread. I am very copyright headed and would be very unhappy if my images were used without my concent or in way that Marcel and others have pointe out.

Anyway,

Back on topic,....

Just another 'Wildlife Comp' really. Too many of em floating around,...

I am not sure where this 'without consent' thing comes up, having read the T&C for this comp I have found the following...

5) By registering you agree to the use of your name and photographs for publicity material in any MYMEMORY publications in any media, including allowing your name to be published on the website if you are a winner.

22) MYMEMORY will only use images entered for publicity or promotional items relating to this competition. Entrants will not lose rights to their images by entering this competition.

Thus, MyMemory can only use your photo (for which you ARE entitled to be credited) in publicity or promotional material in relation to this competition. Simply put, MyMemory MUST make some mention to the competition e.g. "Joe Bloggs - winner of 2007 competition". They cannot use your entry to promote an alternative competition, however it is reasonable to use it to promote the 2008 version of the same competition as long as your receive credit.

As I know someone will point out rule 18) We reserve the right to make changes to these terms and conditions at any time without prior notification.....

Sure they can, and if they DO, then you are just as entitled to withdraw your entry, and possibly even ask for compensation. If they change the rule for this (the 2007 competition) then the altered T&C must remain visible up and until they stop using said images for promotion/publicity. The fact that they state 'without prior notification' does not waive your right to withdraw or seek compensation for unfair terms or practices.

It was basically because when the competition was posted, the T&C's weren't online too, so people could have entered, and maybe have surrendered their image(s) for the organisers to use, sell, etc etc, which was my concern.

As it turns out, that isn't the case :) It's just the ensuing discussion that carried on talking about generic copyright :)

Yeah Chewy I'm entering too! I thought I might as well since it's another way to share my photos and they won't have copyright. :)

I have to agree. I've just fallen into this trap.....let someone use one of my photos for a charity (which was fine) but don't get a photocredit anywhere. Don't care in this case about money, but a name mention would have been nice. We live and learn, don't we?

I was hoping to get a better one of the Polecats for this comp but I havent seen them around for a few days now.
Ive just discovered that my neighbours have blocked up the entrance to where they were :(
 
Just another point to ponder regarding contests and coypright.

Always look for items in the T&C related to editing your photo. You may find that they have not prevented themselves in the agreement from legally converting your color shot to B&W, cropping out negative space, changing the tones, changing the orientation, and those sorts of things. That's a deal-breaker for me.

Always be sure that they have iron-clad verbage about not selling the contributed images outright. You don't want them to collect from print / product sales and not have to share with you.

Keep in mind that it's not just the WINNING shots that they may use for marketing purposes under those T&C. This contest may be used in place of paying for any and all publicity shots they may need, rather than paying for stock and assignment images.

Not according to the website:

Whilst the competition has been launched in association with Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust it is not exclusive to wildlife photography. All entries from all types of photography are welcome.
