Well as mentioned I am new to photography and new to the forum.
I have been reading a round especially the 'How did you learn photography' thread. I noticed that quite a few people have taken college courses to learn and most of those have found that to be really useful and beneficial.
My question is how many of you have taken a course to get you started? Was it beneficial and why? Also if it wasn't beneficial then why not?

Most importantly, how many of you would recommended taking a course?

:)

I am coming to the end of a Recreational Course, its basically like minded people heading out once a week to venture outside their comfort zones. Ive made a few good friends and will no doubt stay in touch once its over :) Little projects include Landscapes, Action and Movement, Still Life and Portraits to name a few.

I also did a Darkroom Course last year, it shows you the ins and outs of everything darkroom. In the digital age, the stuff Ive learned wont help me in anyway, but its good to know how it all works :)

Id say go for it, even if its just to meet new people. By the way, each course ran for 10 weeks, and cost £70 :)

I did a level 1 city and guilds and for me I found it to be no use at all, other than to force me to get out the house and take picutres, that I normally wouldn't take.

Most of the 10 weeks was taken up with ISO/Shutter/Aperture/Composition excercises, but having been into photography for a while I had already picked this up.

I'm planning on going for a higher level course either this year or next, hopefully that will be a bit more use!

Well I will be a total beginner so aperture, ISO etc may be useful to me, though it doesn't start for 3 months so i will wait and see how much I pick up before deciding on the beginners or improvers course :)
