Hey..

Just wondering what you think of photography/camera clubs.. I've always wanted to join one, but I've heard some people say that they're no good..What do you think?

Also, anyone from West Midlands area, do you know of any good photography clubs in this area?

I don't think you can lump all photography clubs together as good or bad, you'll need to go along and find out for yourself if it's what you want.

the main bad thing i hear about some clubs is they are or were very anti digital, and sometimes the members are older !

This doesnt mean all are though, so its quite possible you will find a digital friendly club with younger members too !

i am in a photography club, depends what you want from the club, unfortunately, my club just want to meet every other week and watch slides, but there are really good clubs out there that enter you into competitions and the like, try one.

How to find out about the club is the thing.

I'm only a few mins from you guys... can I come? please? :help:

There should be weekly meetup club type things for TP.. in the most popular areas.

That's a good idea...maybe not weekly but monthly? There are a fair few of us in the Essex area - what does anyone else think?

Yeah, monthly sounds better. I've seen alot on here from round my area.. Brummie lives walking distance from my nans house

My ears were burning! we could start the Yorkshire post of the TP photography club.

Why not start regional TP clubs if you have enough people located close enough together ?

Ah cheers.. Were there any teenagers there, like my kind of age? That's the only thing I'm worried about, turning up and them saying sorry, too young  ..

What kinda stuff did you do there?

Hey, that was my idea.. read the thread :p

Midlands or west midlands would be a good place for a TP monthly meetup club thing.. theres loads of us

I'm Essex/London border and would be very happy for a get together on a monthly basis....

Regional TP clubs - that idea could be a goer - if anyone is in the Berkshire area and want to hook up...

I like the sound of this.

I'm in Manchester, not far from West Yorkshire, so quite accessible.

I've always said I'm more than happy to hook up with other members for some shooting (as long as I don't have to drive too far of course..lol).

I prefer to hook up with other people for shooting, rather than doing it on my own, I find it much more enjoyable to have a common interest and be able to bump yer gums about it, and bounce ideas and thoughts off each other, using each other as inspiration while you're taking pictures.

What about us across the pond? It's a bit far for us to travel every month

I noticed a local photography club based here in Toronto, thought it would be a good idea to join one and actually learn how to use my camera properly. Had a quick peek at the profiles of some of the members and felt very tiny in the grand scheme of things. I thought there may be a few 'amateurs' on there, but every member seems to be either a professional photographer doing model shoots, advertising campaigns etc etc or something to do within the movie business. Very daunting. I think I'll stick to TP.

Would the Essex members dance around their camera bags on the TP night out?:D :D

Seriously, regional TP meets sound like an excellent idea and I would be willing to travel a reasonable distance to attend such a meeting or shoot.. in fact, i am really p***ed off that I can't get to Chester Zoo on the 30th as i only live a few miles down the road..

I went along with my local club earlier in the year and well.. about a dozen "senior gents" who spent most of the evening watching a DVD about the Royal Mail Post Train in the age of steam. Now I know why trapped animals gnaw their own legs off :(

I'd be interested in a local meet but as I don't drive travel options are (sadly) limited. It's a bit late in the season now but I have been toying with the idea of sorting out some kind of macro meet if the interest was there...

no teenagers matey. I'm 32 and probably the youngest. Dont think age is a concern. They are very nice people and i'm pretty sure they would welcome you in if you wanted to go.

They do alsorts there. organise shoots and days out to compititions with other clubs.

Janice isn't far from you if I remember correctly, and I'm in Harlow so also not too far away.

OI!

Yep, I'm up for a meet in the North East Region. Newcastle, Durham or anywhere :)

I might be up for this (usual restrictions of work permitting of course:( )

Ok then, a north (east) get together. Are we talking about an evening event, chat and a pint (or coffee) or day time photo venue?

anyone down south then, i'm in Hampshire

On another forum (Montessori) they have made a map of the world and plugged in everyone's location like an old style pin up board... Maybe we can do something similar here with one for teh world (for you foreigners ;) and then a close up one for the UK.

We do have one, I'll have a look for the link :)

I think you had a bad experience. Don't label us all with the same brush! Just what do you want to get from a club? Try to contact the Chairman or Secretary before attending to see what sort of work they do and what form meetings take. IF you join, it's your club so if it's not exactly what you want get on the committee and make it what you want! (But remember, all the other members have preferences too.)
I worked for many years outside the "club-world", but still enjoyed my hobby (and extension of my professional life.) but now I've joined a club, taken part in a few competitions and interclub battles and I am enjoying my photography even more than before.
I had a quick look at your work on DeviantArt, most clubs would give their eyeteeth to have a worker of your ability to call on for help, tuition and images.
Yes, many clubs do have a substantially elderly membership, but get the right one and you won't look back. Mine is beginning to attract a much wider age range, probably because we embrace all forms of photography and make a point of accepting digital work alongside the older methods.
Blimey! I've gone on far longer than I intended - all the best in your search
