Yes
I saw this in Amateur Photographer last week, and I thought it was quite interesting to see.
Basically they offer up to photographic choices in a poll.
Last weeks was something along these lines.

In photography (in general, or even maybe just *your* photography), which is more important.....to capture....or to create?

Discuss :)

For me it has to be to record, how else can you capture life's memories.

(I'm including video in this)

I voted capture. A "capture" in my eyes is more special. You can capture something/someone special which will always be there as a memory (wedding day, sports events and achievements etc). Its nice to "create" an image but i dont feel it has the special edge over a capture. Duepending on how you look at it, if yo "created" an image (set it up like a flower portrait or something similar) then you can easily reproduce this but with slight variation etc. Something like getting married would be very easy to replicate

It's the same thing. Even if you think you are just capturing 'the moment', you are still creating the image in your head, you have to see it and imagine what you want to capture but you are still creating the image. it wouldn't exist in the way you saw it if you didn't create it.

It's why point and click photography results in boring images.

It's a tough one but it's create for me....
Not just creating an image but creating reactions in the people that see them

Capture or Create at the end of the day its down to personal preference.
Neither is right or wrong....good or bad

Capture is more important to me, create is boring

I'm a capturer :)

For me, capturing means to record something that's already occurring. Creating would mean starting from scratch or at least raw materials.

Let's say you're photographing a wedding. Whether or no you're there, the wedding would still take place. Much easier than creating one!

Capture for me

It is always better to get people when they don't know your there and say "Oi" if you know them of course, wouldn't do it in the street :D

Tony

Both to be honest.
You can capture a moment if you see something thats already there and snap it.
But, if you have to set something up or pose someone or even change it in PS then you create it.

I'd go for whatever works -Like King Kong on the Empire State Building or Godzilla on the beach.

Don't shout at me!

Capture for me !

i have seen photo`s turned into cartoon`s . i don`t mind a little touch up work to improve what i and my camera has caught in a moment .
i always shoot raw .i don`t mind a touch of hdr

however if it was a competition then i would do whatever to try and win .

what i hate is when someone says look at this photo i have taken .i call it last of the unicorn`s . in the photo is a dragon fighting a unicorn . what have they taken !!! ?
very cleaver but not for me

Rog

Create for me. Often when I'm photographing motor races, I still choose a position to stand, check out the surroundings and (sometimes) pan to blur the background as the car passes. I see that as creating.

Capturing would suggest to me wacking the shutter speed up as high as possible to catch that split second in time.

As said though, it all to do with your perception of the word.

Yep a definate capturist here :)

To capture, as I don't have the skill to Create

With you on this one Whiteflyer, I am not a creative person although I do try to do something with whatever I am lucky enough to capture :D

It's both - Capture something that Creates an emotional response.

for me creatively capture :D

I like those two answers lots.

The more I read going down this thread, the more I started to dislike the term capture completely.

I think that for my mind, a true take on a capture would be hitting the shutter with no thought about how the resulting image will look.

If you are reacting to something that is occurring in front you, choosing a viewpoint, the amount of movement you allow or remove, the depth of focus you use, the moment you release the shutter, the lens on the camera, etc etc.... you are creating an image and somehow to call it a mere capture doesn't feel like it respects your very personal thought process and involvement enough.

I will not be using the term capture any more I think. :)

I agree and I demand a third option!! ^

Definately create, if 2 togs are at the same place same time both perfect moments. One could take a shot that holds no interest whatever and the other could use the moment and create something fantastic.

I voted capture, simply because I enjoy taking and viewing documentary photography much more than I do posed photography, however good.

Capturing really is sort of just like seeing something and snapping at it.

Creating that photo is thinking "Right, what aperture, iso, shutter speed, angle and focal length should I use to get the best photo I can?"

I'm going to with Create on this one. To capture a scene is to see it and convey it no different to how other people see it, the trick is to create a scene (doesn't mean starting from scratch or over-doing the post-pro) which captivates the viewers imagination, to create something out of the ordinary around it.

Both, with a bias towards whatever type of photography I'm doing at the moment. I'll capture a landscape, I'll create a portrait.

I'm a 50:50 girl. But I voted create! For me it's about capturing a moment of time that you want to remember, or something visual etc... but to create something unique and personal from that, whether it's in an arty way or not.
