Yes
I have been approached by a local shop to take a few snaps for their web site.

For this service I intended to ask a nominal fee for each shot. As the shop sells nothing I would want It would be a cash deal.

But here's the rub, I'm retired and pay tax and do not want a knock on the door from the taxman for undeclared earnings.

I could declare it, but I do not, and have not filled in a tax return since the dead sea went sick.

I do not want any aggravation, we're talking peanuts here.

Your advice would be welcome.

As a one off. presuming no invoices. I would just do it .

If your going to make a habit of it then register with HMRC

The above is NOT my advice to you.. It's how I would go about it :)

As above, if it's just a one off, don't worry about it.

If you had to do it officially, I'm sure you could add up travelling expenses and other costs to show that it actually cost you money rather than made you a profit.

Steve.

Just do it Dave. In my opinion your over thinking this.
No offence meant.

If it's really peanuts, get the shop to make a donation to a charity of your choice - no tax issues, the shop gets their shots, the charity gets a few quid and you get a warm glow!

If you make occasional sales as result of your hobby the you do not need to register with hmrc. They, nor you want the paperwork. If it's as you describe just do it.

What Hugh said, there's actually guidance on the HMRC site.
Basically, if you make cakes and a workmate wants to buy one, you're fine. If his mate commissions a couple more, you're still fine. If you then set up a stall at a craft fair? Time to register.
It's about your motive. Are you taking pictures to sell and marketing them? Or are you taking pictures for fun that people want to buy?

Cheers for that, that's very useful to know.

I've had a few people offer to pay for photos but as it wasn't much I didn't bother as didn't want the hassle of sorting the tax out.
