You know those pre wedding and wedding pictures of the happy couple with one of the couple out of focus ?

Do you think the wider public actually understand it without having it explained ?

Or are they more likely ask why one of the people in the picture has a blurry face ?

Not a fan of it at all, I'd be lumped in with the wider public wondering why you didn't/couldn't get both the bride and groom in focus! It just puts distance between the couple on the day of all days that's about them being together. File it under 'shallow DOF abuse'

Like all things artistic, context and setting has a large bearing on it. Plenty of photographers are shooting weddings with a shallow DOF

They shoot casualty (the TV show) at about F4 all the way through large screen through to stills use a range of DOF's for differing effect and mood

I think it can work well if thought through (I've done it & the bride just looks irritated lol) but it looks like its time to move on from it

Like any other "artistic" effect, it can easily be over-used. One or maybe 2 shots of that sort in a set might be OK though.

Thx for sharing your thoughts people – my question was prompted by a reaction to one of those type of shots on facebook.

Would you care to share? Is it safe to assume the comments were negative?

Ok, cheers for looking :)

I suppose it's like all creative ideas, they are subjective. How many brides have colour-popped bouquets in their albums even though most here say they wouldn't dream of doing it? And now anyone can do it on their phones.

I remember ballsing up a shot on my first wedding of the bride and her father :bonk: My aperture was too wide so bride was sharp but dad was slightly out of focus but she was more than happy with it (maybe she thought it was a technique  )

IF you have to explain it, then it probably doesnt work. Shooting for photographers for what they like and shooting for what people like arent always the same thing. Where a photographer says OOOO nice BOKEH the couple say why is he out of focus. Ultimately the couple win. its simply people > bokeh

I have Brides asking for the OoF shot of the Groom !!!

Easiest thing to do is shoot it all and let them decide later, it takes mere seconds to include a series of differential focus shots into the main B&G only shoot - so just do it anyway, good for you, good for them to have choices, if they don't like it and you do then good for you :)

If you show it people and people are booking you its probably cos they like it too

I'm with Dave on this. If you get a range of differential focus shots of the same pose they have choice. Some love - some hate.

Also agree with Nick's comment about those chopped off shots where you only get legs and shoes for example. Not my bag but if couples want it then fine - it's their day.

more likely to ask why do you have a crap photo in your album or was your photographer on drugs when they did your wedding. This shot is up there with the B&W with red rose in terms of s***ness. :bat:

Didn't take POAH long to zone in on this thread. Another wind-up about to begin? :)
