I've been watching this thread with interest too John.

I think you're on the right track with upping the shutter speed, to freeze/capture the misty swirls etc.

If there were any street lights round our way....or indeed mist, I would surely give it a try too.

Try taking pictures of an ordinary lightbulb indoors & see what you get. I suspect you'll find that the settings that work best for that will provide a good starting point.

Yes I was thinking of doing something like that, could be a good starting point.

Take your picture when the street light comes on, but there is still some ambient to light the scene.
