Hi all,

After a neighbour saw a few of my pics I have been asked if I would like a little practice photographing her daughter practising at the stables.

I will take a few portraits of her with the horse which I not so worried about but wanted to have a go at catching a few of her jumping.

I've had a little bit of a search and it seems a fast shutter speed (1/500th?) and an angle of 45degrees to the front trying to catch the horse a full stretch seem to be the sum total of my knowledge at the moment.

I'm guessing it would be a case of taking a burst of shots as the horse is about to jump and following that through till she lands.

I have a 40D, a Tamron 17-50 2.8f a Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 and the crappiest tripod you have ever had the misfortune to see:lol:

I would appreciate any pointers on pitfalls and tips on how to make this learning experience a success for me.

I had some success on my first and only attempt by following some forum advice - auto focus on the middle of the jump, then set the camera to manual to fix that distance, and then take the pic as the horse jumps. I didn't bother with panning.

Bearing in mind that this was my first and so far only attempt at photographing showjumping, and there is plenty wrong with both of these, it might give you some idea. Sounds like you will be able to meter from the rider and get the exposure right first. Don't bother with a tripod.

Many thanks for the advice folks and thanks for the links Susie, I'll have a read through those tomorrow.
