I have noticed that a vast majority of amateur bands have very poor photos of themselves, mainly due to the difficult conditions that they play in i.e. poor and changing light.

A friend of mine is playing in a pub local to me next month, they are a good blues band and I am wanting to take the opportunity to try and get some pics but I would like some advice. It will be a typical scenario i.e. low light room with a few spotlights onto the stage.

The equipment I have at my disposal is:

Samsung GX20
Tamron 10-24mm
Samsung 18-55mm
Tamron 70-300mm
Pentax FA 1.4 50mm
Pentax AF-360 FGZ (Flash)

Any advice is warmly appreciated, thanks.

Use the Pentax wide open. Leave the flash at home.

Are we talking high ISO here or will the 1.4 handle it at 200/400?

That depends on how much light there is.

Do a search on the forums for music photography or gig photography, hundreds of threads on the subject.

When you get down to it though, there's no real specific tips, it's just like shooting anything else. Have fun, shoot what looks good, job done.

You'll just have to see what fits. Probably need to push the ISO even higher. Shoot some and review.

can you do a 'studio' mock up ...you are then in control

1.4 is going to be pushing it with a live band. Better to go higher with ISO and get a better depth. It's hard enough to get a good focus without making it more difficult.

guys keep it simple stupid, flash WILL look **** unless you have outstanding skill and a few lights off camera

don't worry about grain too much, pick a shutter speed not to drop below and an aperture then let the iso be where it has to be
