I use a can of "invertable Air Duster" from RS Pt No 497-280. I am sure there are other brands available. For light dust use one of those Gitos rocket air blowers.
Some dedicated slide scanners due use dust detection software if the slides are not too bad.
Be prepared to sit for a long time at your scanner / PC. It can take forever.

Yes- even with IR dust removal it's best to clean them first. Blow off the worst with the jet air. Then use the soft brush to remove any stuborn bits if needed- then 'blow off' again.
