What are people's experiences here? Like the idea to join one. Recently applied to Cambridge one as it's my nearest big town and I was told they were full-up! Worth pursuing even if to go further afield?

I think they are varying opinions -

old hat clubs, fully of stuff old people who dont really understand new technology and reject any post processing as the devil's work...

or a place to meet similar people, go out on shoots with others and gain valuable experience...

Personally, the internet is a camera club of its own.

Mine is a little bit of an enigma. The average age is about 60 but 99% use digital and they love playing in photoshop!

That sounds like one of the local clubs I visited last week, I was probably one of the youngest there at 38, many members are older than my parents but judging by some of the work submitted in last months competition they are ceratinly not averse to a little Photoshopping.:)

I'm going again tonight but I'm not sure if I can afford the annual subs at the moment so I might have to bat my eyelashes or check out one of the other local clubs.

I am on my first year in a CC. I like it, yes there are a lot of old duffers there but we seem to be gathering a few younger people and they are staying because they dont feel alone. Yes most use dlsrs and like to play with PS.

One thing it has made me do is look closer at the photos i take and how to improve them. Also it makes me get out there and take photos for competitions.

The one time I tried out my large local club, I was a good 20 years younger than most and I was pretty disgusted than not one member even attempted to speak to me. I spent the break chatting to the person giving the talk. There are a couple of smaller groups within travelling distance that I might try out, but for now I am more than happy with the t'interweb camera club!

Am i one of those "old duffers" :D You produce some great photos

I joined my local club last year. It is a bit cliquey as many members have been in it for years but I make the effort to talk to people even if they dont. Some people are Ok.The good thing about it is that the competitions have a high standard of entries which encourages me to try harder, gives me ideas, and makes get out and take more pictures. There are a few young people but the average age is probably about 50.
