I've an assignment to do for my portrait course. Basically 6 pictures of a person pertaining to their life but without showing their face.
I'm a big Northern Soul fan and I'm going to take pictures of the DJ at the soul night on Saturday.
I'm taking inspiration from Brian Cannon's work Northern Soul A Photographic Journey. I have a RF602 trigger set to play with.
Wish me luck, I feel I'll need it! :eek: :help:
 
Good luck. Light might be a problem but let's see the results.
 
Here's a few shots. I'm not too happy with any really and my remote flash shots didn't really work.

Nice, I think those fit the brief.did you get and silhouettes against lights?

I have to agree. The second and third shots hit the spot for me, emphasising the tactile nature of DJ-ing with vinyl.

Edit: oh, and the light that brings out the textures of his skin makes it clear that he's not a callow youth playing dubstep, which I figure is entirely appropriate - I can well imagine the character you've portrayed, which I think means you've succeeded.

Two and three work quite well. As a set it needs more variety though. Photos of hands doing things are the obvious go to for this assignment, but shouldn't make up the whole set - the idea of the assignment is to get you thinking creatively for other ways to portray an idea.

Thanks I understand your comment and I could really have done with more variation as you say. I have some more shots of just the records, decks etc. I'll post a few tonight.

Just one thing - they are all photographs of the guys hands. Peoples lives are more than their hands.

Thanks Charlotte already mentioned and taken onboard. Reading the project again it does say the aspect could be an occupation, hobby or lifestyle. Hence most of the shots are of the DJs hands. But I do know I could have done better.
 
Christ.. he needs some new headphones!
