Just 15 minutes walk from our home, I often used to have a look in the window. :(

That's terrible. Must have been a determined job. I thought Camera Solutions had shutters?

They heaved a concrete slab through the window apparently ,breaking the shutters it’s in the Chester chronicle with pics

What an unusual theft.
Probably destined for ebay.
But a load of second hand kit represents a high risk to value, theft/ disposal equation.
Unlike jewelery, a more common target for smash and grab, camera kit is more easily identified and hard to move in all senses.
I think there is a little more going on here.

I suspect that the thieves knew exactly what they were doing, offloading secondhand kit via eBay, Facebook, Gumtree, etc will yield good returns with very few questions asked, new equipment would raise more suspicion and be immediately identified when its registered with the manufactured for warranty. Added to the fact that everything that was stolen was from the window display so access was easy, once a concrete block had been used to break glass and the security mesh.

Camera Solutions is my local shop, the team there are great, and like many high street shops are having a hard time, a lot of high street retail profit these days comes from secondhand kit (especially when some manufacturers new equipment only has single digit % margins), I hope they can recover from this setback.

Well that’s not exactly a smash and grab , that amount would have taken time and a vehicle to remove , with the shop being in the city centre and on a bus route it must surely have been covered by several cctv cameras . .. there are also a few hundred taxis covering Chester 24 hours a day all fitted with dash cams . ... p.c plod needs to be looking at all this ... time will tell.
When I was a night taxi driver we often got visits from the police asking for help as we often saw things happening ,this was before the days of dash cams etc

Break in was at 4am, they smashed the side window by the door, so would have been hidden from view a bit.

David I to am local and know the area and the shop well , a vehicle must have been used for that amount of gear , cctv operates 24/7 .it certainly wouldn’t have been a five minute job

In the city where I live there are a number of 'monitored' PTZ CCTV cameras on top of large columns.

In one case a woman was raped under one of these cameras, apparently nothing was seen and no one was ever identified/brought to justice.
I drive past this camera roughly twice a week and it has been pointing up into the sky for a bit over a year.

In another case two PTZ CCTV cameras face one another on the same type of columns.
Someone climbed one of the columns, cut the cables going into the camera housing and stole the camera ... nothing was obviously seen and no one was held responsible.

In an ideal world ......
