Yes
Does anyone know of any alternatives to the photographers ephemeris? Since it has become an "Ap" it is not as good as it used to be.:(

For Android, try PlanIt and Sun Surveyor. Both suitable for slightly different things, but very useful as an alternative. (PE wasn't available for Android, so I went looking for other apps. These seems the best couple late last year...)

I think you can still use TPE through a browser as well as via the app. Depending on web access, of course - the app will work in the field and can pinpoint your location if the device the app's on has GPS.

Not sure I understand the question. In what way is it "not as good as it used to be"? I use it on my desktop, my tablet and my phone and they all seem to work just as well as they always did.

Stewart, using the app on a tablet, it seems to always leap back to my current location which is fine if I'm exactly where I want to shoot from but less handy when I'm trying to plan a sunrise/set shot over a specific feature (to use a cliché, let's say Durdle Door). IIRC, the browser version allows you to shift a location pin around to plan such things.

It's the layout now that I don't like.I also cannot see were it says the moon is full or new.Bits of it are missing down at the bottom of the screen and I am on a 5:4 ratio screen the old layout had everything in view without scrolling.

Still find it a very useful app on the phone and was great for the eclipse planning.

Holding down the red push pin allows it to be moved to wherever you want before dropping it into its new position.

The sunrise/moonrise and associated phases are there, just by flicking it to and fro.

Whats not to like?

I was having trouble with TPE and gave up. The app I now use is called "photo pills" and is absolutely amazing. Takes a bit of time to get used to and has tons of detailed information including Milky Way dates and times and direction for any given day. A really brilliant app for £7 I believe! Available on the App Store if using apple, not sure about android.

That does look good. I've bookmarked it for when an android version is available.

These days I normally find myself using the suncalc.net website to check times/bearings when I'm planning. Out in the field, it's either TPM or Exsate Gold (which is a free android app).

Despite being a TPE addict, I have downloaded PhotoPills, as I had heard good things about it elsewhere and it is quite impressive.

Thanks Rich.

A few things that I might like tweaked, but it does incorporate some additional tools which are otherwise a separate download.

I have bokmarked that suncalc.net it will be better for me on the laptop as it is full screen with no adverts or donation boxes.TPE seems to have gone for the mobile phone app market. It's a shame suncalc does not have the moon phases or it would be virtually the same as the old TPE.
Thanks.
