This morning about 30 of us were in a field lineside waiting to get some shots of a mainline steam excursion when I heard a loud "Get Off There" and turned to see a pair of pillocks with cameras climbing the railway embamkment trying to get a better shot. Not only were they putting themselves in danger but they were giving the rest of us well behaved Togs a bad name.
Anybody else have this problem?

no.
well .apart from one tog a while ago. pi***d a local off a vicar so much, that he banned togs from the wedding service.
done a few there, and managed to talk him round a little.
apparently this guy was so in everyones face, that the vicar asked him to leave the church, half way through the ceremony.

Not sure about the amateur side of things, but to me, it seems that some pros are closing ranks locally such is the perceived threat from good to excellent amateur photographers both locally and globally.

One Rugby ground I have shot at have started banning photographers at the 'club photographers' behest, which is itself poor behaviour if you ask me.

In the aviation world you get this happening. People making holes in airfield fences to put their lens through or leaning ladders against them are the most commons things. Although, there was also a couple instances of people on ladders under the approach! :cuckoo:

Things like that generally gives us a bad name with the local base security and the majority of good photographers do sometimes cop some flack because of it the minority.

I've heard the same about some ice hockey venues.

So what is wrong with going the extra mile to get the shot.......I would employ THEM.

The guy who comes back saying someone was in his way so he couldn't get the shot....he gets fired.

You want to see some of the antics we get up to to get the shot.

Lying in the middle of a main road to get traffic coming at me.
Lying on the totally open bow of a race boat at 70mph on the sea, no rope, nothing, just lying there, wide angle looking astern - if I had fallen off, my wife would be a very wealthy woman and there would be a large patch of red water.
Lying in the gutter on a motorway to get the shot from gound level of a truck thundering down at me - 20mm lens, so the wheels went by at about 18" from my head.

Loads of stuff like that. I thrive on it!

Lots of rubbish

And what if you misjudged any of those? The person responsible for running you over has to live with the fact that they've taken someone elses life.

Or how about if lying in the middle of the road meant someone had to swerve to avoid you and caused an accident?

Either your talking rubbish or your a retard!

I jump out of planes for fun so I know the rush you can get from it, however, putting other peoples futures at risk is a stupid thing to do!

well does this not sum up the original post?

The solution is, is become PTS qualified like myself. This allow you to walk along the lines to get those needed shots :)

That is not entirely true.

Even if you are PTS (Personal Track Safety) qualified, that is not an open invitation to walk anywhere along the infrastructure, you can only be there if it is work related, you have the relevant paperwork, and you working under the guidance of a COSS (Controller Of Site Safety).

If you are within the boundaries of the railway otherwise, you are trespassing, and are liable to be fined up to £1000

Gobsmacked at Lensflare's post... totally gobsmacked.

Putting ones own safety in jeopardy is up to oneself, but endangering the lives of others for the opportunity of 'the shot' is totally selfish at best, and quite simply disgraceful. It is akin to drink driving.

Lets hope for your sake that next time you lie in the gutter on a motorway, the next truck driver isn't portuguese!

And if your wife is going to be a wealthy woman, then I would selflessly be the one to console her when you are gone - or party with her, depending on how she takes it.

I look forward to seeing your name listed in the darwin awards very shortly..............

I worked in a zoo in the U.S. Teenager climbs two safety barriers to get an unobstructed shot of a prairie dog. Kid gets bitten, prairie dog has to be euthanised for tests including rabies, kid gets a large payout. Although public liability insurance is the loser, so is the zoo as its premium goes up, and one of its much loved animals is euthanised due to a kids selfishness etc.

So you get the perfect shot and someone elses life or your own is worth it? You obviously don't value life very highly.

I was just going to say something along those lines. PTS only qualifies you to walk within 3m of the line, whilst doing so you are not allowed to carry out any work. As 48thEagle says you need a COSS or you can do another course and get IWA (individual working alone), even then I think you need to get a RIMINI plan for each time you go trackside. The rules are there for a reason to protect you.

Apologise to rant a little but I work for a company who does a lot of rail work and safety is drummed in to us.

Seems to me your more into thrill seeking than photography.......try and have a degree of respect for other peoples feelings and lives.

Certainly not as extreme as some of the cases mentioned in this thread already, but I shoot a lot of gigs from the crowd and the huge majority of fans are accommodating, letting you pass to the front of the stage with a polite "Excuse me" when you're carrying a DSLR.

There have been a few gigs though where other photographers demonstrate such bad manners pushing past with their rucksack clattering people in their wake, standing directly in front of people without any consideration to their view and shooting between peoples' heads so they have the shutter going off right next to their ear. It's been bad enough in the past for me to lower my camera, anxious not to be associated with them.

when i did Wayne rooneys girlfriends 18th there was a few not so friendly guys there who didnt care about elbowing me out the way or trying to anyway :boxer:

It's a sad fact of life that there will always be the ******** minority who spoil things for the majority.

Sorry, been away on a series of shoots....just in.

All the situations mentioned above were on commssioned shoots, not fly bys.

The truck was driven by a German...he was doing the statutory 56 - or 90kmh, I have no worries about what I do - Have a look at STREETFIGHTERS and you'll see what I mean. I was on the magazine from the very outset and still do a major portion of the work.

Wheelies, overtaking cars on the back wheel a speciality - especially with loud exhaust so it frightens the ***** out of th edriver - if an L plater, all the better. More FUN.

Burn outs - with the Police station in the background if we can find one - they love it...NOT.
Flame outs - same as burn outs, but with petrol poured over the back wheel and set afire before taking the shot. Looks good at twilight with a couple of lights on the bike.

Plenty of crazy stuff - if it is the lifeblood of the magazine.

Retards are those who want to hymogenise life and the world. 30 years ago, people lived life an dhad fun. Now we are supposed to be grey and conform to the "social acceptance agenda".

Nope. Not me.

You must be pretty new to skydiving
