Hi everyone :)

I'm new here so I'm not sure which specific forum this should go in, so I'm sorry if I put it in the wrong place.

I'm throwing a surprise 61st Birthday party for my mum on the 17th April in Wakefield, West Yorkshire from 6pm till 11.30pm.

I was wondering if anyone here can offer their services for free as I am willing to pay your travel costs or if someone can least do it at a very cheap price?

Looking for someone who maybe can do like creative candid shots, artistic shots as well as photos of the little details (like decorations, banner, balloons, cake etc)....but don't mind really :p

Wow - free :) Quick everyone form an orderly queue....

profusionuk - welcome to TP - not sure you'll get many volunteers... What's in it for whoever comes forward? Nothing other than travel expenses and maybe a fiver to cover someones big event? Not much of a reward for someone who has maybe invested a £1000 or more in their camera kit....

You offer nothing - and expect a nice big DVD of professional images for next to free? I think many might find that a bit insulting :) but will leave it for others to decide if they're interested - however if I was local - I wouldn't be.

Have a good party though.

ok - just checked my diary - you're in luck I can do it - and for free - or just my travel costs.

I'll be travelling from Sydney so around £800 should cover it.

I'll do it for travelling costs too. By the way, I live on Mars.

amateurs might want the experience though, no pressure as not being paid!

It's not a joke! I knew it would be quite a stretch to ask for someone to do it for free lol!!

...few people told me that someone online may be able to do shoots for free or at a cheap price to build up their portifolio, someone just starting out or someone doing photography in their free time, so thought why not ask...sorry if I insulted anyone!

The thing is, would you post on a forum for builders and ask a builder to build you a free extension? People are not being funny with you but what you are asking isn't really on. I don't mind doing things like that for free for family etc but we have not even met you. You have joined and the first thing you do is ask for a freebie.

I can see why its a joke to you guys but thought there was a possibility that someone can do it for free or cheap here, guess I was wrong!

TBH can't really offer much just a law postgraduate!!.......but anyways doesn't matter now I'm just gonna have to shoot pictures myself instead even though I have a lot to learn with 450D!

maybe you can do something free in return? what is your profession?

Fingers crossed its an accountant, I really need some help with my taxes.

Dibs on the job if I'm right!

Why not start a new thread and ask for advice on the way to get the best from what you have whilst doing the party.

when was the last time a lawyer did anything for free? BC I expect - and they've been ripping people off ever since.

Guess you were, I have learned very quickly that "free" is a dirty word on this forum.

I think pretty much everyone on here takes their photography seriously. It's easier for a photographer to find a party to shoot for free than someone finding a photographer to shoot for free.

Any way good luck ;)

:plusone:

I agree, the guys and gals on here are the most helpful bunch I have come across and I am sure they would be more than willing to help you with any questions you have on how to use and get the best out of your camera.

Thanks yeah I might just do that and browse through forum as well....it was just that I wanted someone else to do the shooting because the photos will look so much better than mine and professional. But gonna try to practice before the party.

I agree generally yeah majority rip off but a few do for free well legal aid and charity firms!!

I guess I can see that now :p feel like a right idiot starting this thread now

yeah - well you get me photography aid and I suspect I might be more intrested.

If you want advice on how to shoot the job - that's different.

Have a look in the talk lighting forum, you will learn a lot from there. If you decide that you want to use flash it looks better if its off camera, the cheap way to do that is to look up flash in the pan on here and buy a lead from him, they work well and give a better light than direct or the inbuilt camera one will.

Good luck with it :)

Well then theres no chance I will get a shoot for free!

but yeah gonna start practising instead

Thanks for the tip! :) I definitely struggle with the lighting so I know I need to practice on that and I really don't like using the flash on the 450D so gonna look into that.

now you're moving in the right direction - hope it goes well :)

whether you do or don't at least they'll be 'free' so you'll be happy!!:)

glad this thread finally went in the right direction

wonder if theres a modification to the forums that can be made that means people who've less than 20 posts can't use the word free :)

stick around and ask questions about photography profusionuk :)

Like a swear filter modification?

Perhaps make it change "free" for "£1000"? And perhaps "cheap" for "expensive"...

That would get a few people going!

And if that was implemented:

I agree with all awp has said. But don''t be too hard with the OP. With so many people into photography these days there's is bound to be someone willing to do it for free................................................................................................................And that is the sorry state of the industry.

^ That's the thing I heard that some people will do the photography for free like someone did for my aunt's wedding last year to build up his portfolio...so naturally assumed that some people would probably do it here free or cheap.

Nevermind I'm just gonna have to practice whenever I can and try to take good people photos because I find it hard to take really good photos of people especially indoors and hardly upload people pics on my flickr!

If you only have the on-board flash, you could try something like this, looks a bit odd but works well.

I read one of these DIY canister flash. I want to try it out but don't have any canisters lying around!

Phew!
I dread reading these threads now - I feel for the OP - there must be many 'out there' who don't realise what a can of worms this sort of thing invariably opens and they get a series of broadsides from irate toggers...
Glad it worked out in this case.
I'd also hate to think some aspiring photographers are getting frightened off by our reactions...
...maybe a sticky somewhere pointing out the pitfalls to new members posting requests such as this?

and then a sticky to remind them to read the sticky first and then a sticky to tell them what a sticky is.....................

Oh the fun of t'internet forums.
