This is a popular place for photographers (Holyrood Park in Edinburgh) as it's a great viewpoint for sunsets and city views.

Not something you really think about (although I always try to be aware of people around me etc) until you read about something like this happening.

Have always felt reasonably safe going there on my own, usually a few other people about - students (halls of residence nearby) as well as other walkers, joggers, tourists etc. Will be a bit more wary from now on...

Although a bit of an odd time to be out photographing as it was raining that night and also over 2 hours past sunset.

But anyway, just a reminder to be careful when out taking photos on your own, especially at night (not just in Edinburgh of course, but anywhere).

Sorry, but I don't believe it. I smell an insurance fraud.

You cynic Stewart

(Guessing this is something you are all too familiar with in your line of work?)

im with Stewart....

Or the location was elsewhere where he shouldn't have been and the theft occurred earlier?

It's depressing that I think it's most likely true. I'm careful when I see neds walking about with dogs, or in groups when I'm out shooting.

i dont know but i am not going to say ins scam why take the phone because that gave the robber time to get down from the hill and who is to say the guy had insurance in the first place not every 1 has insurance times are hard crime is on the up i watch my back and who is around me when im out with my camera gear and mine cost no were near that

Who would have thought such a thing could happen in such a lovely place.

Those accusing him of fraud are opening yhemselves and more likely the forum to defamation action.

Nope, nothing here is stated as fact and last time I checked everyone is entitled to an opinion, right or wrong.

Presumably he had a tripod as he was shooting after dark, in which case I'd take my chances against a dog versus me and tripod with heavy ball head attached.

Insurance fraud does come to mind IMHO

Soooooo wrong :)

Personally I dont need a news story to remind me to be safe.. i dont need to hear about people getting conned by credit card thiefs and I dont need to be told not to open zip files sent to me telling my I have won a camera..

I just use my common sense :)

I hate them staff dogs and I dont think there easy to shake off.. If I really believed the moron could or would set one on me.. I would probably think twice...

I can understand why he was out there shooting hell when I'm out at night I can easily have over £500 just in light painting kit before I even consider my camera gear, this is one of the reasons I very rarely shoot alone after dark, that said I'm nearly always carrying a old maglite that takes 5 D Cells and trust me I wouldn't think twice about making full use of it

Risk being ripped to pieces or fill out an insurance form, seems a no-brainer to me.

Everytime I go out I have around 15k of equipment in my case... people rob post offices for less :(

Insurance fraud??

You guys for real??

:shake:

staffies are normally very placid dogs but get on the wrong side of a bad 1 and you would know all about it i used to own pits years ago and use to breed staffies a full grown man will find it very hard to keep a staffie down never mind the fud thats with it so tbh i can see the guys point

Brilliant. Are we talking about the same Edinburgh?
95% of Edinburgh has no problem. I've lived here almost my whole life and never had a problem. But there are some places I would avoid, as with any large city.

Arthur's Seat is not one I would avoid during daylight, but after sunset...?

When I got burgled the thieving scum took my camera but smashed it to pieces out the back, grrrr.

I don't think people realise the value of a camera.
