Those of you with an interest in equestrian photography should find this interesting - an interview with Jon Stroud where he explains his thought process behind a number of his award winning images.

Not sure I agree on another usage of the term "weekend warriors". Some of us equestrian shooters may only do it at weekends but it doesn't mean we take it less seriously or go at it half cocked.

Some nice shots though... We really do need to get more jumping and evening in the diary. Some driving would be nice too. But yes its always nice to see that you have some similar shots in your collection to those of the very seasoned pros.
 
I hear what you are saying Neil, it's the same in many industries. Some people are trying to make a living out of something that others are supplementing an income with.

I guess there will always be friction there whether it is equestrian, motorsport, weddings or whatever else may be your field.

It definitely becomes more of an issue when the 'weekend warrior' is giving away their images and as you quite rightly say, some WW's (to get away from the term a little :)) are very good at what they do.

And whats wrong with anyone trying to improve their standard of living with a little extra income, seriously, no one had ever been able to answer that question because if they attempt to do so then all i say is if youre offered an extra job for a few hours at the going rate would you accept it, of course you would.

Why is it that part timers in any other field of employment are fully accepted as a valuable part of the workforce but in Photography some full timers are so far up their own arses protecting something they dont have any right to claim as theyre own that it's a wonder they have time to go and actually shoot anything, some sectors of the sports photography industry simply couldnt survive without these so called weekend warriors as some of the so called full time professionals wouldn't lower themselves to cover the lower league and amateur stuff.

Im one of these so called Weekend Warriors, i get paid the going rate to do it on a part time basis, i also pay my taxes on what i earn, i pay my own PLI insurances, i am fully accredited by the governing body of 2 major sports organisations, i am published in both the sports trade papers week in week out, last week i had a total of 17 photos published across 2 trade papers, 1 regional paper and 1 national paper with a full front page on the major trade paper, i really dont see why anyone would have any problem with me or what i do, im not stealing work from anyone as i tend to supply the papers the so called "big hitters" dont supply.

Ive always been told that if your work is good enough it will sell.

The only problem i have with anyone is those who give it away for free, if your work is good enough to be published then it's good enough to be paid for.

I don't feel I can financially make the leap to full time photographer so I'm building up work and hopefully some time soon ill grow some balls LOL

We're insured, have backup kit and don't give our work away. We've actually been complimented that we're more dedicated and reliable than some so called professionals.So lets not tar everyone with the same brush.

Surely the problem is with the accreditation? IF Badminton and the like are allowing in any Thomas, Richard and Harriet who are only uploading in the media centre to facebook then that is the organisers fault, as they are failing those there with a genuine reason to be there. At the arse end of the football league where many of us frequent, there are too many games for the professional photographers to take in and so actually a service to the public is being provided. Without our pictures the local rags would be thinner and much less interesting.

Quite right, too! I'm 'also' a sessional tutor, I don't earn a great deal from it, but it does supplement my pay, and no-one seems to think I'm putting a 'full time' out of earning? I think the biggest challenge for a 'part-time' photographer is finding a good outlet for their work.
