Photographer gets beaten and robbed on Dartmoor

That is bad, i'd rather chuck it on the ground than let them have it but that'd likely amuse them too, scumbags

Oh that's wrong assholes

It's a bit worrying as that's my backyard. I'm usually out and about all over Dartmoor on my own, which isn't a problem, but since I can't do any 'proper' walking at the moment I was planning a 'click and drive' photography trip down there on the first decent day. I'm just hoping my partner doesn't get to see that report or he'll try to stop me going. Anyone know a Rottweiler for loan?

I have several shotguns and 3 rifles- if you need a bodyguard Jan :p:p:p best advice- don't go there

Terrible thing to read, bloody Chav's:punch:

I used to live on Dartmoor and that's the first attack of the kind I've come across. They'll probably be from Plymouth, a city that has long had problems with a criminal culture. When we lived on the farm, there was an ongoing problem of thefts from farms but no violence associated with them. There is some violence in the rural area, of course but it's generally of the family dispute and chucking out time variety.

This is my main worry when going out alone for a sunrise / sunset shoot. You never know what lowlife is about. Everything I have is insured through Photoguard so if they want it then they can have it as it's not worth it in the end. Hope he's ok and on the mend. Hopefully they catch them. I think by the serial number in the EXIF, any images uploaded are traceable by the police?

Uploaded images! The scum who did this won't use it! It been sold in the pub for £20 and a block of hash!

Yes, the camera will have been sold. They won't have taken it for the images.
We used to live just down the road. The worst we ever had was people with matches, though that was extremely scary when we had a brush fire a road width away from a house surrounded by trees........... But I've not heard of an incident like this one before so it isn't going to stop me going there. If I'm out on my own near roads, paths etc I'm always a bit wary.

True, but hopefully the person who buys it will then tell the police where they bought it from when they come a knocking and its then only a matter of time for the scumbags as someone will dob them in, CCTV, who knows. We live in hope.

This is sad news and is a bit concerning too. I'm always out in very quiet places on my own with a lot of gear, but I've never thought it would be much of an issue. Next time I'm out I'm definitely going to have this story in the back of my mind and be wary of other people.

I'd carry a weapon or something but if I used it id be convicted! Where's the justice?

Indeed. Seems sometimes that the victim has less rights than the assailant if you hit back.

Reading the report also it stated that there was a woman egging the idiots on as well, hope her parents are proud of that fine daughter they have raised.

My billingham bag might get a new keyring....... Knuckle duster

Yes. It is bad. I am always out on my own. You can feel very vulnerable, but it's either that of don't go anywhere sometimes.. particularly as I would love to do some landscape at the "right" times. I

I won't be getting rid of my manfrotto 055 legs and 410 geared head now then! That 410 head around the head might smart a bit

I'm out on Dartmoor quite often and due to the rugged terrain I always have a 7ft solid oak walking pole with me. It can also double as a quarterstaff if the need arose. I used to be involved with medieval re-enactments many moons ago so I trained in quarterstaff fighting methods ... might come in handy someday. :naughty:

I hope the guy is OK and they criminals are caught and convicted.

It is an offencevto carry a weapon. Admitting that any item in your possession is a weapon is an offence whether you used it or not.
Be careful what you say even on a public forum or any social media.

I can remember many years ago when I used to do a lot of late night driving, being stgopped by the police and asked why I had a wheel wrench by my seat,
I was honest and told them it was for protection ;)
I was told to get one of those big maglites, instead, no one would think twice if I hit an attacker with a huge, heavy torch I happened to have by the seat

I'll be okay if I see you around then! I'm never, ever worried if I'm off into the middle of the moor. Nothing's going to happen there. Where this happened isn't remote - it was a car park next to the road at one of the major 'honey pots', though most of the grockles and doggy walkers have gone home before sundown. A village not too far away but no chance of anything being seen. I would think opportunist rather than anything planned.

I was also told that by a local policeman. Try explaining why you have a baseball bat under your pillow (Stop sniggering.) But it's perfectly reasonable that you would have a big 4 battery Maglite by your side.

Keep a look out for a bloke with a shaggy grey beard wandering around carrying a big stick. You never know, we might bump into each other one day. I'd be pleased to meet you.

Don't know about canon but a Nikon d300 held by the 80-200mm lens would give them a severe bruising as it landed on their napper..
All in the act of handing it over as they asked of course..then giving you time to run off to safety hopefully.

Soft target really, usually or at least in my case older bloke on my own, secluded spot with some expensive gear,I hope this doesn't catch on.

Yup. I go for long walks with a camera, I'm alone but I can be pretty certain that anyone wanting to mug me will not be.

Swing it by the strap, it'll be far more effective...

Meanwhile the other 2 thugs (as described in the article) beat an extra 7 bales of whatever out of you...

Meanwhile, like the other 99.99% of the population, I've never had any problems on the Moor, either with camera kit or without, so don't let this sorry tale put you off visiting the place.

I keep one of them with me at all times in the car, rarely do I use it as a torch as I prefer something a little more compact and powerful, but it's amazing how secure you feel with a good old maglight to hand when things start to they a little sketchy there's a good reason I call it a t**tting torch :p

Edit: cannot believe that didn't get caught by the naught filter

I've never really thought about the fact you could get mugged for your camera, I suppose as mostly a sunrise shooter I hardly see anyone as it is let alone someone who wants to nick my camera.

I'd let them have it, it's insured and nothing worth getting seriously injured over.

Hope they can get this chap's camera back for him.

Happened to a friend a fews back the police reckon that they followed him from the wedding he had shot and then robbed him of his gear at knife point.

If you feel a bit concerned when shooting in a quiet locale and it seems like you're being clocked, keep the mobile handy and even pretend you're speaking to someone , keep a loud rescue whistle and don't be afraid to shrill it.
Both will make anyone think there's a chance of being caught out.

Rape alarm!!!!
