For all the people who read this first post then answer without reading the whole thread please note.. the following is a parody aimed at photographers who post threads saying they are being accused of being a pedophile if someone so much as gives them a funny look let alone asks them what they are doing.. the following didnt even happen..

I was at an event the other day taking a few pictures when this guy started talking to me.. he said "that setup looks expensive"

I couldnt believe what I was hearing.. was he calling me a thief? Just because I have a DSLR and a big lens he automaticaly thinks I stole it? I assured him I had paid for it and he kinda pulled his face in that "yeagh right" way they do.. it was obvious what he was thinking..

I hear this happens to a lot of photographers all over the country.. They never accuse people with compact cameras yet they can get quite expensive.. Its just us DSLR users isn't it :( I am going to get my reciepts printed and laminated and carry them with me.. that will show them..

Do you think I should.. Or am I being a bit Paranoid ?

PS pinch of salt.. you either get it or you dont :)

I think you're being paranoid. Shouldn't worry about it. I think we need to keep a level head with all the accusations that a relatively small amount of togs receive. Or we are in danger of becoming paranoid. Just walk away from them.

I'm not sure that someone saying it looked expensive means he thinks you nicked it, maybe he was just impressed?

Simply owning a dslr does seem to make people think differently of you though. Just yesterday at an air show i had a random stranger ask if i was with the media while i was mooching about.

What really grinds my gears is being discriminated against for having one. For example i went to a gig recently at the O2, i had some reasonably positioned seating tickets and thought it would be a good opportunity to take the camera. Before i went i wanted to check if it was ok to bring it so i checked the terms and conditions on the website, which stated "no unauthorised visual or audio recording inside any Venue in The O2".

So i phoned up and asked what constituted a unauthorised recording. Their answer from the customer services guy was no professional photographers, great i thought as i am far from being a pro. But he then followed that being a pro is down to the size of your camera. In his words, if you have a small compact or mobile phone camera (where you don't stand a hope in hell of getting a decent shot) then you are an amateur and can bring your camera. If your camera is big, and this includes any camera that you cannot fit in your pocket, then you are a pro and will be refused entry.

:bang:

Whatever anybody accuses you of, whether you have a camera in your hand or not you do not have to indulge them.

You know who you are, you know what you are doing - believe in yourself.

P.S pinch of salt and Zen taken - I get it.

I would imagine that your reaction after he said it looks expensive (I get people saying that to me a lot btw) when a long way towards planting any opinion it was stolen into his mind.

When I get those sort of comments I tend just to pass them of with something along the lines of 'It's worth it to me'.

I get it.

ANd you clearly stole it. Bloody common theif.

I'd tell him to mind his own business tbh. It's obviously a jealousy thing i'd be thinking.

I do apologise.. I just presumed people would get it...

The situation didn't happen it was a parody... ooer a women looked at me funny.. she must be calling me a pedophile.. a women asked me what i was doing in the park with a camera.. she must think i am a pedophile... why do they only accuse dslr users of being pedophiles...

Sorry i was having a pop at all the paranoid photographers who think there being called a pedophile if anyone so much as scratches there nose near them :)

That really funny lol

hahahahahaaa

until it actually happens

you wait until you get surrounded by a gaggle of angry, paranoid mums and a fight nearly kicks off, then we'll see how humorous you find the situation :cuckoo:

maybe he thought you looked like a "boy" and was starting to chat you up :D:D

Wind yer neck in.

I would find that situation funny. On the one occasion it happened to me (Gaggle = more than 1 btw) I did find it funny.

I reckon it was a good parody, maybe the timing was a little out mind - should have let the paranoid thread get a bit more heated first :D

While I get the funny side of it and it seems photographers are JUST as paranoid as the public, being accused of being a pedophile is a serious thing...

If word gets around, that's it, you're a pedophile. People talk, stand across the road when you come out of your house and gasp, etc etc.

I think photographers are right to be worried about possibly being branded a pedophile, because it's a terrible thing to be accused of being!

that's polite
thanks and i am aware of what a gaggle is

I find it funy when I am out with my 300 or 500 and they say, now thats what I call a camera! they clearly dont look at the black thing on the end ie 40d or a 1 series body.:D

I 100% agree but feel you missed my point... having a women pull her face while your taking a picture isnt being branded a pedophile by your local community.. its pure paranoia on the photogrpahers part...

Yes I did miss your point :p

People pull their faces at me all the time, even when I don't have a camera!

I am thinking of putting my sense of humor away for the summer :)

I make no apologies for being blunt
I do apologise for not being totally clear I was not pointing out gaggle numbers to you, instead referring specifically to my anecdotal incedent.

Don't do that. I'm still funding aspects funny.

I'll tell you what, lets all sit here and make jokes, and then when photographic restrictions get more intense we can sit here and compare very expensive paperweights.

I have friends with kids that aren't allowed to take any type of camera to school sports days also there was talk recently of restricting street photography in the aftermath of G20.

i don't like being threatened for taking photos of my nephew playing football.

sorry if that makes me weird and sorry if i don't like being told to "wind my neck" in for having an opinion on a hobby that i enjoy.

Your completly and utterly missing the point....

I absoloulty agree with your opinions as i daresay do many.. but this isnt about restrictions or about people being called pedophiles or about being set upon.. its about people thinking thats happening to them when it more likely isnt.. ie paranoia

I get that comment too. But it is usually when I have my Rolleicord with me. Last time I heard it, I was using my RB67 hand held and the comment came from someone with a shiny new megabucks DSLR.

Steve.
