I'd prepare for a grilling at immigration with that lot

Can I ask what is the white diffuser thing on the flashgun you're taking? Is it some sort of softbox??

No spare body?? :)

:exit:

Lets hope they dont loose your luggage then.

its a carex bottle deffuser ;)

I have Insurance for £6000 and the camera and lens are coming with me as hand luggage.

I gave my mum my spare and its not fair to steal it for 3 months

Wow, one hell of a kit you've got there! You better declare all that gear to customs on your way out otherwise you might get screwed for customs tax on your return! Might be worth taking proof of ownership e.g. photocopy of purchase receipts if you've got any?
Have fun doing whatever you are doing and look forward to seeing your images in the future.

its not too heavy, I usually take that lot when im doing weddings minus the softbox and lightstand.

I've never had any problems carrying a backpack stuffed with lenses, bodies, speed lights laptop etc. through customs or immigration in the states.

Its better off in your hand luggage where it can be scanned rather than the TSA ripping your hold luggage apart to investigate it!

Get a decent, comfortable, backpack bag within hand luggage size allowance and don't let them think it might be heavy. Make sure your laptop is easily accessible for security scanning and has at least enough charge in the battery to boot up every time you go through security, just in case you are asked to.

ffs loose the water bottle, that will get you pulled!
I would pack the stand, brolly and softbox, gloves etc. in your hold luggage and anything you can't not be without or of significant value in your carryon.

Mini DV tapes, batteries, tape etc. can all be stocked up on in Walmart etc, unless you are going somewhere remote.

I usually carry 2 bodies, 3 or 4 L-series lenses,, at least 1 flash, battery grip, 6 batteries 2 chargers & 12v charger, cleaning kit, 8 CF cards, couple of filters, etc. Laptop, spare phone, portable HDD, Satnav & windscreen bracket, cables etc. Plus a magazine, paperback, pens & other travel essentials.

iPod & phone etc. go in my jacket pockets.

Anything that needs to go in the hold gets well wrapped up in clothing and/or put in a hard sided plastic container for extra protection. They will beat your luggage up, some airlines and airports are worse than others.

What are you using for power leads? I have sourced US mains leads for everything, usually, if you know somebody who works in an IT department they'll have a box of excess leads kicking about. Saves on weight, bulk, sticky out bits and the need for adaptors.

Hope that helps, even if your insurance covers it and they loose your luggage you're either going to have to buy or hire replacements if you want to keep shooting.

Have a good trip.

Dude they sell bottled water in the US, you can get evian but its really expensive, dasanni tastes vile it is just filtered tap water in fact most is just filtered water, the best stuff is the local where ever you are spring water Florida it is Zepherilis (something like that). We usually call at a 7eleven or any other pharmacy and pick up the 24 bottle cases for about $5-8 depending on where you are.

As for the kit wow I would never think about taking bits like soft boxes and light stands with brollies. Flash, spare camera batteries, a few lenses 24-70 and 50mm maybe I think I would leave the 70-200 at home. Stuff like battery testers if it don't work charge it, if it still don't work put it to one side, spare flash batteries I would buy over there as I need them always having at least 1 spare set. If it was a working trip then yes take testers and everything else but pleasure trip I would leave stuff at home myself as it just becomes something to worry about, I took my stuff to London early December, never used the 70-200 but I carried it round London on my back for 3 days, never wanting to leave it in the car or hotel room I was never further than 2m from my camera and kit bag, I could say ruined the weekend but it didn't but I was always conscious I had the thing with me.

Wow. 5D + 24-70 and you're good to go. It would be interesting to see how much of that lot you have actually used when you get back. Have a good trip !

oh, if the wink wasnt a hint enough, yes I am working over there which is why im taking a few more bits than I would normally :p

Blimey! You planning to hire a jumbo jet?!

You might want to take along copies of the original reciepts to show the customs guys on the way back...

Very good idea. Maybe also declare the camera kit on your way in so customs can log it.

Have a good trip!

Seems like a reasonable selection of kit for a trip anywhere overseas. There also seems to be a good amount of paranoia about getting pulled and needing receipts. I wouldn't worry.

The customs guys are human and see a lot of photographers come and go. They'll certainly have a look through your kit but its not a big deal. They're not going to march you outside and stick a bullet in you (as some seem to imply). Just take what you can in hand luggage and wrap the other stuff in bubble wrap for the hold.

OSB speaks wise words. Keep a battery in your camera so you can fire it up if asked. (I never have been.) The customs guys will always be happier if there is a battery in the camera (and HDDs etc.) anyway. I have no idea why but that's what they tell me on my regular trips through the States.

I have never had an issue taking any camera gear anywhere on planes. I flew 18 times last year alone. Why people are so fearful of Customs I don't know, but there really is no need.

Having said that, don't take the water. You'll not get past the check-in desk with it. :)

If you fly BA, there is no weight limit to your hand luggage. You only need to be able to lift it unaided into the overhead baggage rack. This is a major reason for choosing BA if you're a photog travelling reasonably light (body + 4 main lenses). I find the LowePro Vertex 200 an excellent travel bag in this instance.

This was the last advice I heard - check the BA website before travelling!

I would check your baggage allownace as I am flying in June and mine has just been restricted to one piece 23 kgs and 1 hand luggage no more than 10 kg and apparently all airlines are doing it now:shrug:

You can buy extra baggage slots you know.

You wont have a problem with all that kit.
Hell im going in 4 weeks to the US and Im taking more. They are usually cool about it.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I was told when I bought my AW200 that it really wasn't quite small enough for airline carry on (due to the shoulder straps I think) so I never tried in case they slammed it in the hold. You seem to have no bother though?

I am guessing our shooting style is slightly different but I'm suprised no fast prime and especially no tripod.

that looks great, but bare in mind some airlines have carry on weight restrictions. im flying to australia in 4 weeks via emirates, and their weight limit is only 7kg. the above bag is probably 5 or 6kg as it is!

Never thought about that, the bag is 5kg, so problems with the airlines with weight restrictions. I have to say I great experiences with Emirates to Australia, now if only I could afford a ticket, but my bank balance means I would struggle to buy the bag at present

Any advice to help them along?

Im taking the camera, lenses and laptop as carry on.

Just be nice, helpful and co-operative, whilst keeping in the rules set for carry on luggage and you'll find customs are people too!

You can buy extra baggage slots you know.

Never felt the need to, my hand luggage is often overweight, if the bag isn't doesn't look oversize and you don't 'make' it look heavy you should get away with it. I've been on flights where they have stated that they will check all hand luggage on boarding and still walked through with 2 bodies, 4 lenses, a couple of flashes, laptop etc. on my back.

Hold luggage isn't too much of a problem, though flying back from the US with only a single hold bag at 19kg and no 'personal item' in the cabin is a challenge :D
