I have ordered 250 6x4 prints from them and mine have come back very very dark, and the colours look slightly de-saturated too, now i have calibrated my monitor with a Spyder 2 and on my canon i9000 the prints look superb, should i be complaining or is it my fault?

I had the very same problem with Photobox earlier this year. Have a read of this thread.........

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=70787

This is one of many threads along the same theme!

I have only had problems with 6"x4" prints - larger prints have been ok. When I contacted Photobox I was informed that they use a different printer for the larger prints.

After several batches of poor quality 6"x4"'s from Photobox I have taken my business elsewhere - the results of which have been a lot lot better......with no further adjustments to the images whatsoever!

the quality seems to vary quite widely, i complained got another free of charge exactly the same, so no good ask for a credit or moneback.

the same picture was printed out on canvas and was perfect, with another company so to me it was the photobox ones that were wrong

I gave up with Photobox years ago, the prints always looked really muddy. The main problem was that there printer stripped the colour profile off the file and put there own one on so it was impossible to get a file printed like I wanted.

Also I could never work out how they added VAT to the order, gave up in the end...

I now use Leach colour.

do loxley do smaller sizes could'nt find them on website?

wow, ive had the same problem, but always thought it was just my pics/monitor.... the larger sizes seemed to always look so much better, where's the little 6x4s seemed very 'cheap.'

They provide a calibration print free of charge if you request it and one comes with each order anyhow. Download the calibration image from their website, look at it on your monitor and look at the calibration print in your hand, that should give you an idea of the correspondence between screen image and final Photobox print. I must say I have had a pretty good service from them for various sizes of prints

the truoble is i dont want to change all the settings on my 'calibrated' monitor just to appease them, on a plus not however i had an email from them after just a few hours emailing them that they are issuing a full refund :D

so where should i be sending them? there only holiday snaps but i want them to look right, my missus gave me a right roasting when these turned up! :bonk:

scratch that i just got my refund!

DSCL replaced photobox for me, great service and consistent colour

do you calibrate the photos for them or just use your calibrated monitor?

I'm calibrated to sRGB, images I send are tagged with it. They supply a profile for proofing and optional conversion to but really that just stops their machine doing the conversion itself. They print on Fuji gear, same as photobox but I guess they keep a closer eye on it

BTW, their lustre prints are really nice :)

more than likely your monitor is too bright and that you sent them as RGB rather than sRGB. tilt your monitor back and see if they match

i dont have a monitor that changes tint/brightness when tilted and also it was calibrated with a spyder 2, plus i exported as srgb

does this picture look dark to people? the print i received was so dark i could only make the water out

Nope, if anything I'd say it was just a touch on the light side.

Great pic.....and no it doesn't look dark at all

I've had great results with 6"x4"s from dscolourlabs :)

im uploading the pics now :D

what you using, what is your luminesance set at 110-120 cm3 if so set ti to around 80

I have Dell 2707WP

cant comment on photobox themselves but what a picture

thanks, i was getting some great results hand holding the camera in vegas, fast glass really does liberate you :D

I use Loxley and they have not let me down yet. They have always bent over backwards and the good thing is you can ring up and speak to them! I am sure there are loads of other good firms but I went from photobox about 18 months ago after deciding it was too much of a lottery as to what might come through the door.

Loxley indeed do that size and would charge 35 pence per 6x4 with free colour correction. I would give them a go on a small order and see what you think.

Good luck and all the best.

I had a couple of 10x8 prints done at photobox on Monday 22nd Dec, they all came back dark as well.

I have a couple of prints arriving from them after xmas, not sued them for a while now but havebeen thinking about trying some alternatives as I always get darker prints from them so have to over brighten stuff before I send it in.

well fingers crossed i have tried dscl ill let you know how i got on

Bit harsh isn't it, I'd think a refund and reprints would suffice

Damn typo's

I have also decided to stop using photobox, same problems with dark images and thats with everything calibrated at my end. Last Christmas I had some A3 calendars made up for 3 close familly members and some of the images were ok but all were dark and some had obviously not got the ink processed fully into the paper.
Looking back I wish I had complained, but I thought I was being over critical at the time.

I've had fairly mixed results from Photobox before, the big prints have normally been ok but the small ones not so good.

I ordered two photobooks in their 2 for 1 offer in October. My parents were thrilled with their Christmas present until a couple of looks through it and the pages have started to fall out.

I've just emailed photobox and am awaiting a reply. I don't expect one till Monday in fairness as I would imagine there won't be anyone there till then. I am hoping they will offer to re-do them as I spent ages putting them together.

Same happened to me with the photobooks although it did take a little longer for them to fall apart. Photobox do have great customer service and they replaced them very quickly. Unfortunately the replacements look about 3 stops over exposed and a few pages had lines that looked like they'd been touched by an edge whilst still wet. Photobox refunded the original amount and sent a 3rd set which were much better.

So great customer service just a shame about the quality of the products :(

back in the States, the "pro's" use Adorma, as they have a NO-ADJUSTMENT print option, so basically, they'll print without any colour correction/optimizing, is there any lab here that has something similar??? Nothing I hate more than getting an adjusted print :(.
Im definitely switching from photobox for my wedding client's prints, but photobox was good and cheap I may add, for the 8x10" and above.

I don't believe photobox adjust, not sure they even offer it as a service. DSCL don't adjust either and seem to be flavour of the month

I've been testing prints from various printers and the service from Photobox was great, but the print (A4 size) seemed very desaturated. I've sent the same file to other printers and the colours look the same on all the prints apart from Photobox

Got my prints back from DSCL and boy what a difference! well happy now, and they were cheaper! took 2 days to get them back and i used the same files i uploaded to photobox

have had no problems with DSCL either, plus a price of 40p for a 10x8 cant be bad, and a 16x12 at 95p, all plus p and p of course but minimum order is £5.
