Hi all, well it seems a lot of people on here have their own photoblog/personal photography sites, so the question is, what do most peole use?
I've heard 'wordpress' talked about a few times, or do people actually do it the old fashioned way (buying a domain name and hosting)?
I've got my own website for something else using the second option, but would quite like to set up a quick and easy to use photography site. Any help appreciated :)

Couldn't you use the same hosting for both sites?

Wordpress is a good way to go though, seems to be very flexible and versatile.

Possile, although I'd have to ugrade my account as at the moment the hosting only supports one domain name.

I used to use E Blogger (I think that is what it's called anyways lol). It was really easy to set up, edit and tweak (and it's free). It's not really a 'photography' related website, but you can still use it to host photos.

Wordpress is so easy to use - this site http://p3dro.wordpress.com/ was put up in 10 minutes as a proof of concept. Its been tweaked a bit since then and added to, although not for a while. It works perfectly with a flickr account. Is dead easy to update. And its free.

Once you get the hang of it, you can customize templates etc and shift the whole thing to your own domain if you want.

Alternatively, there are many hosters who will run a full blown version of wordpress - do a search for "laughing squid" - they make it easy to set up using your own domain name - see http://www.p3dro.co.uk as an example of my music blog - hosted by LS and run on wordpress full version. Its more complicated to do, but once its running, it just runs

I've done a bit more reading and after the last few replies I'm going to go with wordpress, all I've got to is work a snappy domain name. Anyone recommend any wordpress tutorial sites? or is pretty easy to learn anyway?

I started redoing my website a week or so ago, but with not much luck! I've just been sooo busy.

And every time I sort out a layout, I think of something new!

It's tough to find something you like, so look at other peoples websites and gather ideas. Don't copy though :)

Good luck!

Don't copy though

That's one reason for my slight indecision on using wordpress, as nothing against them, but a lot of wordpress sites do seem to have a bit of generic look about them.

I always find this a difficult situation to be in because I'm rubbish at creating websites. Well, my programming skills are not too bad... but chosing colour schemes etc aren't top notch :)

Let us know what it looks like though :D

I just bought my own domain names and cheap hosting and put my photoblog up using PixelPost. Been running a long time now so maybe it's due an overhaul. But I did look at Wordpress as well as others but I prefered the customisable options of pixelpost and the chance to make my site look different from others. You'll find a lot of photoblogs out there looking way to similar, wordpress being a cuplrit imo

Hawker, defiantly take a look at Pixelpost before making a decision. Wordpress is much better, but requires a bit of work to get it looking like a proper Photoblog because it is first and foremost for text blogs. If your looking for a bit more than just a basic photoblog though Pixelpost is very limited and wordpress would be the better choice.

True, if your looking for a photoblog only pixelpost may be more up your street. If you are looking for a blog with photography attached then Wordpress ain't so bad

Pixelpost is limited in that it is good for photoblogs only - but other than that it is far from limited, infact, it is very unlimited

Pixelpost does photoblog serving only - but it does that very well. Give it a looksie. It is very popular.

Hi Hawker

I have recently set up my website http://www.ajbphotos.co.uk using Pixelpost.

After an initial struggle (my fault) I now find it very easy to use and maintain.

It's all hosted on some free webspace, advert free - http://www.freehostia.com and accessible through a domain name that I pay about £2 per year for.

Drop me a line at geordie.anth@ntlworld.com if you require anymore advice - good luck with your site!!!

Anth.

there is as many pixel post sites as wordpress that i see and a lot look similar because simple is often best. Just go with what you like for yourself and is best suited to your needs, I'm sure you could customize either enough to your hearts content :)
