Photo52 2012 : Join In !!! : Week 52 Busy

thanks Sarah - I won't have time to do a reshoot, but colour *should* be easy enough

Ooooo ooooo ooooo I have an idea for colour, I've been looking at my intended props for a few weeks wondering how I could use them!

Reshoot:thinking:

My art attempt didn't quite work, I have another item setting in the freezer, I hope to get it done in a few days when work is out the way!

Thanks Sarah, only a few weeks left :bonk: Just curious though, is the last week of this year on the 22 Dec? Or are we stretching to a week 53 albeit a four day week :)

'Ello all....Colour and reshoot

How hard can Colour be

Keep shooting....it's nearly the end of 2012 TP52.....or is that the nearly the beginning of 2013 TP52 :bonk:

Cheers, all.

Would it be too early to start our 2013 threads :-D

YES!

Are we doing it the same way next year? I did propose an alternative that would make it a LOT easier to find new shots when they're posted, and would prefer that.

What post/part of thread was that?

I might struggle to find the post now, but the principal was:

We each have a thread just like now, but don't post our main photo's in there.

Instead, we post all our shots into a single thread pinned to the top of the forum section. That thread gets new photo's posted to it, with a link to the poster's thread, but NOTHING else. Lets call that the submissions thread

When you want to comment, you simply click the "newest unread" button on the submissions thread, and can scroll through ALL the photo's that have been posted since you last had a chance to look. As you do, you can click on the links to be taken to the individual thread for the poster, so you can comment, then go back and click on the next link etc etc etc.

Even if you look at the submissions thread but don't have time to comment, at least you can easily find all the photo's you've not commented on yet when you go back.

The problem I have is that if I get behind just a little, or even if people get out of sync with the week they're on (like now, some are posting week 46 while others may still be on week 40), it's a nightmare finding all the photo's you've yet to give crit for. Even if you can find the earliest shot that you've not yet commented on in someone's thread, you may still have to go through several pages before you've seen them all, so that by the time you're ready to comment, you've forgotten what you wanted to say about some!

It'd also be nice to have one thread where you could scroll through ALL the photo's, from everyone, without having to skip past loads of comments.

It'd also mean just one thread to subscribe to (unless you wanted to see everyone else's comments), and would do away with the need to edit thread titles and the possibility of missing someone's photo because their thread's got to the bottom of the page before you realise.

You could still post links to your own shots, posted in the submissions thread, in your own thread if you wanted people to be able to find yours easily.

I'm in India - so at long last we have a theme that suits my location! So no excuses apart from the fact that I am here on business - yes working today and tomorrow :-(

This would have been a candidate but for the fact that my 'rules' state the photi has to be taken during the correct week.

Well, well I think I've caught up and commented on everyone's recent posts...still seeing the goods

If I've missed you...let me know

Cheers all.

I have started my 52 very, very late (yesterday) Going to try for my Art shot tomorrow (have an idea) and then catch up with this weeks theme!

Does reshoot and colour mean we have to post two images? One reshoot of a previous theme and one image for colour?

Hi Steven  nothing like leaving it to the last minute

Hi Mark, that does seem quite a good idea. Having all the pics in one place and clicking the newest post button could be very handy indeed. So as we go through out the year and fall behind, at least we would be able to find the pics easily we have missed.

Only thing I would raise, is if a nsfw image was posted, we couldn't change the thread prefix, but I suppose if an image did arise, we could post that image in our own threads marking it nsfw with a link in the submissions thread.

mmmmm, sorry but to me it seems like more work - an extra thread to look in and to find shots - and still have to go to their thread to make comments.

Or maybe if we have a single thread for each week instead of just one thread for the whole lot? Would that work better? We would be able to put comments in the single thread easily enough without overwhelming things, as it would be just one week's worth. In effect - only one thread each week to check in :)

I'm all for the idea of having a single thread where the participants post the final entry for each theme and a link to their individual threads, but nothing else. No crit and no chitchat. I'd still want to post the photos in my own individual thread though, so I'd be posting them in two places but this doesn't bother me.

Hmmm, I don't really have a problem with how it is now. I use the spreadsheet to find new posts, if you don't update you're row then feedback may be limited.

Cheers.

But that's the point. At the moment lets say I go to your thread. If I've not looked for a little while, I may have to wade through several pages to see all your shots. In fact there may not even be any shots at all on the first couple of pages I look at, just other people's comments. With this idea you'd go to just one thread, and would see all unviewed shots one after the other.

The only time you'd have to do any hunting at all would be if you wanted to see a specific shot or a specific persons shots, but there's nothing to stop people ALSO posting shots or links to shots in their own threads if they wanted to.

You wouldn't need the spreadsheet at all, unless you wanted it for statistics, and wouldn't ever miss a shot again. And the spreadsheet isn't much use to people who join part way through; who's adding them to the sheet?

The spreadsheet is only any good if you keep up to date very regularly. If not, how do you remember who's shots you have and haven't looked at, especially when some people are on week 40 while others are on week 46? And even if you can, the best it can do is take you to the beginning of a thread, not the latest shot.

but having one thread like the one you're suggesting, except on a weekly basis, would work better maybe?

Possibly, but I'd just be a little worried about missing someone who's catching up so is posting in a thread from 3 or 4 weeks ago, and also think that by the end, 52 threads PLUS everyone's individual ones would become unmanageable.

Basically, I don't necessarily need to see everyone's week 27 photos side by side, I just need to see all the photos posted since i last looked, regardless of which theme they're for.

Well done Marsha
Alas I was up to date for about an hour :bonk:

I'm quite happy with the format as it stands. My phone always takes me to the last post of a thread I'm subscribed too so unless I look at a thread and forget to comment I never miss a shot.
Did someone say about posting a new thread each week  :runaway: I think I'll be in all sorts of bother keeping up with that!

The problem is Marsha, if someone's posted, say, three shots since you last had time to look, each on a different page because others have been commenting in-between, you have to manually hunt to make sure you've seen them all. I've not found that subscribing helps one bit, because you then get loads of emails telling you about other people's comments, not photos, so have to filter very carefully.

It's all fine if you can keep bang up to date, but some of us simply can't do that with work and family commitments.

I appreciate that some people don't have a problem with the way it is now, but even if you don't, what would be the problem with my suggested method? Even for people who can keep up it'd do away with the need for the spreadsheet, let you scroll through all the photos without comments "getting in the way", let you subscribe to just one thread instead of many thus limiting the number of emails you get (a big problem for me), AND make it so much easier to find a specific photo, especially if you can't remember who took it! The brilliant "each others favourite shots" idea crashed because it was almost impossible to search through everyone's threads one at a time looking for your faves. If they'd all been in one thread, with no comments between photos, it would have been a no brainer!

I feel quite strongly about this, because it's not the photography or the actual commenting that will stop me doing the challenge again next year, it's the admin involved in making sure I get to everyone. And I DO want to carry on next year :)

If anyone can suggest a "workflow" that makes it all easy using the current setup, allowing for the fact that it's impossible for some of us to check every night or even, sometimes, every week, that'd be great, but I can't think of one :(

So here's a case in point :)

At the weekend I got completely up to date with commenting (I think). I then fly off to Newcastle for work, with no time at all to even think about the forum until now.

So I've just looked at the forum, and there are 19 threads with unread posts. But I have no way of knowing which of those threads contain new shots, and which just comments. Thread titles help a little if I can recognise which one's have changed, but I normally can't. The spreadsheet doesn't help me, because again I can't remember who I have and haven't already commented on, especially anyone who's a little behind. And subscribing would have resulted in 19 emails, none of which would tell me that a new photo had been posted unless I got lucky and the first unread post in a thread happened to be a new photo (you don't get further notifications until you visit the thread).

With my method, ALL I'd have to do is click on the "first unread" button on the main thread, or follow the link in the one subscription email I'd have, and begin commenting on the photos laid out in front of me, one by one.

The point is, I'd have time to get up to date now using my method (and it'd be fun), while waiting for my flight home, but not if I've got to click through all 19 "new post" threads to find the shots I should be commenting on.

And that's with only 4 days away from the forum and very few people left in the challenge!

I totally get where your coming from Mark, I got up to date on Sunday by the end of the day the threads were updating thick and fast! Today I had 22 threads to go through :bonk: I do read a lot of the comments, mostly just scan through as I've learnt quite a lot from others critique!

Oh I only get email updates to my own threads which I delete as they come through. Then I get on my PC and delete seemingly loads of them! If you're getting emails for all you must be inundated:nuts:
