How was the meet ? Lots of light painting and star trails I hope!

Just thought I would post this here in case it is of any help checking on threads you have replied too.

If you mouse over the icon with an arrow on it to the left of the threads in the 52 section this will tell you if you have posts in that thread and will give a day when you last posted. Also if you click on the tick box to the left of the thread title, this will take you to the first new post since you last visited the thread.

Cheers, I always welcome shortcuts :bonk:

Well, according to Dawn's spreadsheet: 107 started, 94 posted week 1, 75 posted week 2 and, so far, 34 have posted week 3.

Steep decline...

If you haven't updated the spreadsheet you might want to nip in there and do it otherwise your masterpiece might get overlooked.

Cheers and and I have to say, I'm mighty impressed with some of the sigh posts...quite a hard theme...

Hi just quick note to say thank you to all the people that have replied to my 52 thread for the last 3 weeks. If I haven't got to you yet I'm sorry and I will get too you soon!

Thanks again and come back soon

Chris xx

:D Bet that took you all by surprise !!!

I have a man coming to fix a fence tomorrow morning, so in case I'm not online first thing I thought I'd get this week's up early.
I'm relieved to say that it's a bit easier than week 3's offering.

I'll be posting my week 3 tomorrow, so I'll try to get around as many of yours as I can once mine is up.

watch it Sarah we'll be expecting it early every week, and yes thats much easier

Ah, let's see if I can make up for week 3 with week 4!
Sorry for all I've missed commenting on, I'm losing track already.

Phew this weeks seems a little easier :)

Just a nudge for those who haven't, can you please, please try and keep the spreadsheet up to date for you're threads.

As mentioned several people appear to of dropped out or not posted yet and for those of us that use it to provide comment it is very useful.

I've been a bit busy this week but will get around to posting on everyone's threads over the weekend :)

Some brilliant and inspiring work do far everyone, keep it up :)

Whooops! Sorry! I completely forgot about it this week! :bonk:

oops forgot the spreadsheet, it's now on my bookmark bar lol

had a great idea for this one, something close to my heart, but, I need to make it first hee hee (so am off to the shops, this could get messy, can't wait to see hubby's face lol)

<--- Has a seriously sweet tooth.

I don't think I'll have any problems coming up with ideas for this week's theme. Let's just hope I can refrain from eating them before I've got the shot I want.

:bat:

Indeed, just bought 2 boxes of Smarties, 2 Cream Eggs and some sticky honey...went out of the room, came back and Isabelle had scoffed the cream eggs.....

This week`s theme is a relif after last week.

I appologies to all of the TP52s who I`ve not commented on yet. I am completely lost as to who's I've seen and those I have yet to look at.

Could I make a small comment on the themes that are being suggested at the moment? The first one (direction) was OK, however, the last two have been IMO quite poor.

They tend to force you to take something very literal, take 'fear' for example it's going to bring out a lot of scared faces etc etc. I ended up taking a photo of a clock with Friday 13th on it, but didn't bother posting it. (Mainly as I have been madly busy this last fortnight). Same again for 'Sigh', it's not something that is going to produce a technical challenge, something that will push your style of photography to something that you don't normally do. I was actually going to post a photo of the post to say that we should take photos of sighs, as sigh is just what I did when I saw the theme!

What I fear it's going to end up as is a random bunch of shots that are roughly related to the word picked.

So, why not look for things that are either more focussed on a technical style (long exposure, night, panning, shallow DoF) or something that is a little more open (wrong, lost, forgotten, sharp, over).

Just a thought...

Hi Mark (and anyone else who may be curious),

The origin of the current batch of themes is explained to an extent in this (rather old) thread.

In short, "the 52" in its current form started out waaay back in 2009 when Simon came up with his own list of themes for his own personal challenge and some of us decided to join him in his journey. It worked well and so was repeated in 2010 with forum members invited to contribute their own suggestions for themes. Thus the "bag of doom" was born and given that there are still plenty of theme cards in there it's the same bag that I'm using today.

Due to the way that the themes were chosen it is a mixed bag in all senses of the word, but what you choose to do with them is up to you. That can be a literal or more artistic interpretation or something only vaguely related. The intention was for the theme to give you a starting point for inspiration and nothing more than that.

Of course there's no reason whatsoever why anyone can't run their own 52 challenge focussing on technical styles or choosing their own themes. iirc Dade did just that in 2010.

p.s. The bag will probably be running a little low on themes by the end of this year, so it'll be opened up to suggestions again at that point

You could apply "long exposure, night, panning, shallow DoF" to any of the themes so far, might take more thought that the obvious, but that's why I and I suspect most of the 52ers take part.

There will be many 'open' themes over the next 48 weeks

Andybod is doing that this year too!

I think the variation in interpretation has been huge. Sarah has got motion blur into sigh and Superpippo took a photo of Fried Egg And Chips for fear!

Although I think sweet will have very similar contents! I have a different idea as well as lots of confectionary based ones!!!

I know some of the themes so far have not been easy but it has certainly made me 'think out of the box'. I spend alot of my weekends out taking pics and the 52 challenge has helped me to experiment with a creative side I didn't realise I had!

In the evenings now instead of vegetating in front of the tele I have been experimenting with table top pics. so far in this challenge I used motion blur, played with DOf and lighting!

Last Saturday I was tested but give it a little time and ideas do appear! to me it doesn't matter if lots people have similar ideas as each will be different in some way and all will have had lots of thought and effort put into it!

You make your own rules for your challenge so I don't see any reason why you can't choose your own theme some/all weeks. I would still judge each pic individually and comment accordingly!

Agreed.

Anyhow, a good dose of insomnia has given me chance to catch up on some other threads.
I don't have time to trawl back through them all though, some are quite busy.

I'm going to try and visit new threads each week.

mmm I can see what Mark is saying, I guess it would be *easier* if we had themes like 'water' or 'earth' or 'home' etc but the themes we've had have been challenging and it wouldn't be a personal challenge otherwise.

In my case I've done light painting 3 weeks in a row - something I'd never tried before. So already I've been 'forced' to expand my horizons. I like it when the theme makes you think a bit more

I'm thinking of participating in this, as a way to improve my photography. I must admit though, the thought of trying to comment on all other participants is rather off putting. Not because I don't want to comment, but because of the sheer volume!

If you want to improve your photography I recommend this challenge. Don't let trying to comment on all participants put you off, it will get easier and I for one couldn't tell you who has/hasn't posted on mine!

I look forward to seeing your pics soon!!

Agree with Sarah, it will get easier. Dont feel like you have to comment but it is interesting to see what other people have done as there is alot of techniques and styles being used.

Okay, I guess that's me in then :D I will try and catch up with the previous weeks before making a thread of my own.

Thanks :)

Hi, numbers have already dropped, as they did last year, so I have more time to comment on all that are using the spreadsheet linky :D if you PM Dawn (username Drodd) she'll add you...she's a good un

You can either catch up in one go or start fro week 4 and add weeks 1, 2 and 3 over the coming months.

You will get a lot out or it...but not wanting to put you off, it's not easy (and shouldn't be).

Cheers.

I'll 2nd that comment Andy...tis def not easy...at least SIGH wasn't....what a mare of a theme.....:bang:

Right...posted up last 2 weeks though Sigh is a bit of a cop out ( alright....a MAHOOOOOSIVE COP OUT !)...got the rest of the week to catch up with peoples posts now

Have figured out that there are certain emotions that it's darn near impossible to photograph...Sigh being but one of them....I've just looked throught the list on Sarah's link to the 2010 themes...ye gods...wisdom ??

If everyone posted an index on the first page of their thread, with a direct link to each week's submission, leaving feedback would be a lot quicker. We're only four weeks into this challenge and for now, finding the photos by scrolling through the pages one by one isn't too time consuming, but pretty soon it's going to become a pain in the backside. So if you want feedback people, please post an index!
