Just a quick question, how do you guys feel if your photo has been used on another forum without being asked? I have noticed from one of my Flickr referrals that one of my photos has ended up on another forum, there is a link back to my Flickr but no accreditation.

This is the first time this has happened to me so just would like some advise

I would stay away from Flickr! Send them a large invoice. If they link directly - then the solution above also works! :)

Ive sen a lot of forums that look very similar this must be a cheap template

Dave:thumbs:

if he is claiming them to be his then make a post on the forum, if they are being used as an example and linked from flickr then ignore it. if you don't want people to hot link your images then change your settings on flickr.

yeah thats what is happened. The photo is just used as an example of London landmarks so just linked from Flickr, he is not claiming to be his.

So this is ok then?

I feel that the bit underneath the photo is not really a proper accreditation, I cant seem to find who to contact to ask for to kindly be removed.

Also is there any ways of stopping people taking stuff off your flickr?

It's a bit cheeky, but they are only really admiring your image, nobody is claiming it to be their own. I'd have been wound up if it was used by a company, or if they claimed it was their own.

@TheBigYin, thats so funny Lol.

i have my flickr locked down so people cant download images... dont suppose that stops screen prints or linking the image in the same way i do to post my images on TP...

i like marks approach above! genius! :)

As people said before, they only admire your photo of London. If it would be a firm trying to make money with your photo then I would start to worry and do something against it. :)

Now I know the context that the images were used in, I'll make an additional comment if I may.

The person linking to your shots is using them as examples of London Landmarks. Flickr is a photo-sharing site (not just a hosting site) and they've linked the photo's in the Flick'r approved way. If you're not happy with them being linked in this way, then post any future shots as private. To be honest, I'd be tempted to sign up on the forum and post a message into the thread, quoting the message where you're shots were shown, and thank the person who posted them for bringing them to a wider audience, point out that the shot is copyrighted, and all rights reserved, but if anyone would like to use it for any purposes, then you can be contacted to discuss licenceing fees on (blah-blah-blah)....

I'm afraid that those settings don't even stop people from downloading the image. :(. They just mean that the right click option is disabled.

lol, like this...

Personally I'd prefer someone provided the hyperlink to my photo, rather than the IMG link to the photo - that way it's generating traffic to my flickr page. In the format it is, it's easy to make the assumption it's the posters image (even if they're not claiming that).

Is there anyway to disable the direct links to the IMG in flickr?

Yes - don't use Flickr

the linking was perfectly within the terms :rules: of the OP's agreement with Flickr - he didn't restrict access to just Friends and Family or anything of the sort, and the person linking into the forum put a backlink in to the OP's flickr page. As I said ^^^ Flickr is a Photo SHARING site - If you put images on there, don't be surprised if they get shared with others. If you don't want that to happen, restrict the access or better still, buy some hosting space, and host your own

As it happens, I'm a member of SSC and post there frequently (I usually hang out on the London Subforum and specifically the Shard thread :))

They do take a strong line on at least making a link to the source of any image that's posted

Sticky in the City & Skylines section

FAILURE TO CREDIT PHOTOS IN THIS SECTION

and another global announcement that's at the top of every sub-forum on the site

Strong reminder on posting images: provide credit, link to source and respect copyrights!

If you are still unhappy, want it removed and don't want to create an account just to send a PM, I'm friendly with a couple of the mods. Drop me a line and I'll get something sorted out.

edit: As, others have said, I would suggest that the reason your pic has been posted is because the person that did so thought it is a great picture. If I were in your position (and it happens quite often) I'd be content with a link back to the Flickr page.

After reading this I don't see a problem either. He is giving you all the credit as has been discussed. If he just posted a link then plenty of people wouldn't bother following it. Oh and nice picture :)

eeerm.. they have to download them to view them.. thats how the internet works.. they just need to look in the internet cache on there own computer :)

I Can't see the problem either! You should feel proud that someone thought the picture worthy of sharing! Flickr is a photo sharing forum, what difference does it make if it's seen on there or on Flickr?

Have to agree that he isn't trying it on and saying they are his own but you might want to add some kind of watermark as it's only a matter of time before someone will make out they are theirs.

Love TheBigYin quote on Flickr, Sorry about the irritating watermarks - some French W*n*ers keep hot-linking to my Copyrighted image...

the way that's been used, i would have been very happy they did it, totally non-commercial and just admiring your work

So you let them get away with it....Could have been a nice payday for you ;)

Now - I never said I didn't invoice them for unauthorised use as well as my little edit, did I ?;) (just didn't want to, and won't hijack the thread or turn it into one of those never ending did you get paid threads )

I think it's easy to get too precious about our own work. Surely one of the reasons for posting them on the Internet is so that they can reach a wider audience to be admired by more people? In this context they have paid you a compliment and done you a favour by promoting your work. If anyone misrepresents or makes a profit from your work then that is a very different matter. :)

It already has a watermark - though it is very discreet and could easily be cloned out.

I did just check, and there are indeed five of my photos posted on that thread (not by me) :D

thanks for all the advise, the reason why I had asked this original question is that I have never had this happen for and your all right, I am happy that he likes my photo and is showcasing to his forums. I suppose that I was getting confused with if he was claiming it was his and just liking the photo

So after thinking about it I am happy with whats going on and have learnt what the difference is between claiming to be theres and just liking and sharing a photo.

I agree with that Flickr is a sharing website but I am now thinking about setting up my own website, what do people think of Zenfolio or Smugmug? or are there any others I should think about? are they easy to use?

Also is my watermark a bit too weak? what would be a better watermark?

Cheers Musicman too :-)

I had this problem a few months ago with an American site.

Sent them an e-mail saying stolen copyright etc.

Long story short ended up with £50 for the displaying my image for 2 days. They paid really easy I was thinking I could have got more but lessons learnt for next time!

Makes me think about flickr though.

The problem is if you allow people to do this with your work - you lose control - and the picture could end up anywhere - without credit or payment to you. Best advice - avoid Flickr at all costs! Host your pictures yourself.

The best place is to get yourself some web space and host yourself.

AS far as I am concerned if you don't want your picture "lifted" then don't post it on any site. If you do then accept that someone somewhere may credit it as their own.

Simple

I do both. I have my own site and Flickr.

TBH, I'm just a bit more relaxed about it.

If someone

- gives an appropriate credit
- links back
- isn't using the image in a commercial context

I'm happy. I very much appreciate it if people ask first.

In fact, I say as much in my copyright statement on my own site.

To be sure, while I do sell some photos (indeed, some of the sales I have made have come through posting them on skyscrapercity.com) it's not my major source of income. Maybe I'd have a different attitude if it were.

The only way to be absolutely sure nobody uses your images in a way you don't like is to never show them to anyone else. :)
