Photo Transfer

Do i have to have a Data cable to transfer photos to my PC as i dont have a card reader. The camera is a Nikon D90

Yes, you need a cable like this in the link to transfer photos.It should cost a few pounds in any electronic shop

You need a USB cable if you don't have a card reader, your camera should have a port to connect that cable, check what kind of port your camera have, is worthy to check your phone USB cables as they normally are compatible with cameras, same for ebook readers and so on.

The D90 comes with just the right cable for that purpose BTW

OK, i found a data cable that is compatible and i transfered the pics. Now i cant view them as they come out blank with NEF on them. Is their a free programe i can use to open them?

Just to add to Mike's info, you are shooting in Nikon's RAW format

If you shoot in jpeg, then you should be able to view them on your PC anyway.

I see you're sorted but for reference Tesco sell a USB2 multi card reader for about £8, I've had one for ages and it works a treat.
