Hi

Some advice please. I would like to back up my photos with some online storage (so full size) as well as allowing people to view the files through the web and I could choose which of my photos they could see (eg password protect some albums, family pics). I was told that phanefare.com could do exactly this, but apparently this has now changed so only people who are signed up to phanfare can view the pictures. I don't really want my friends, family and aquatences to have to sign up for something (even if it is free) in order to view my pics. I dont mind paying for this service. I was wondering if anyone new of such a site where this service is offered?

phanefare would have cost around $55 and I understand smugmug.com does a similar thing, but would cost $149 any more

Cheers

Hi Pot,

I use www.zenfolio.com they have unlimited storage and you can upload full size images. You can also passowrd protect any file or folder. I have been with them for over a year with no problems they charge $40 a year see link for pricing and functions http://www.zenfolio.com/zf/features.aspx

Feel free to use my referal code to get a $5 discount. Referral Code: XAZ-BZE-WQZ

Hope this helps

Pete

Smugmug is $39.99 for a year and allows you unlimited storage and password protection etc. You can even trial it for 7 days. The $149 option is the 'Pro' account which allows you to sell photo's, use your own domain name and fully customise the site.

If you fancy $5 of SM use my code ZvRLxwKenKGYA

Forgive me for sounding stupid but doesn't flickr do all this already? With the flickr uploader and a pro count you can upload as many photos as you want to as many albums/sets as you want and set viewing permissions for all images either in bulk or individually. £12 a year is nothing.

Thanks for the info, yes I just read about smugmug prices, should drill down futher in future DOH!! I'll have a good look at zenfolio. I'm not sure if Flickr uploads and backs up full size pictures?

Thanks for the referal codes too

Not sure about backing up but you can upload full size images. The chances of Flickr loosing your images is extremely slim though. Besides if you want a full backup then having your own backup locally as well as remote would be the best option :)

Backing up to a service beyond your full control – like FlickR – is very UNwise: they control your access to your photos, not you!

Have fun!

Any remote storage is never 100% in your control unless you have physical access to the machine. Basically remote backup is not a trustworthy solution.
