Being the cheapskate i am i`m looking for a free photo stacking software program to help me with my macro photography, is there such a beast that`s worth having ,many thanks Harvey

Photoshop... if you have it, can stack. Edit/Photomerge.. let it align the layers... then select them all, and use Edit/Auto Merge Layers. Select Focus Stack, and tick the box for smooth transitions etc.

Just tried CombineZP. Tried to load up 20 D800 TIFF files, and it crashed.

Combine ZP is free, but you get what you pay for!
It will work with smaller files, but has a nasty habit of putting a mirror images all round the outside of the stacked image. Yes you can start cropping, but why should you have to?

You always get a fringe around images that are focus stacked... it's caused by lens "breathing", not the software.

I've used both Zerene and Combine programmes and they have never given fringe images. The output image is full size so no obvious cropping has taken place. I'm not sure how they do it, but as both programmes have to be paid for I asume that they work "a bit harder" to solve the problem.

I use Zerene myself, but ImageJ and TuFuse might be worth a look, they're free. Havent tried them myself, sorry.
