I am sure this topic has been covered numerous times. I have an Epson V700 Scanner. Scanned almost all the negatives in the family photo albums and am pleased with the reproductions. I am moving onto the scanning of the actual photos now and the results are more varied. More times than not I am not very happy with the results. Usually grainy when enlarged etc. I was wondering what settings (resolution, ICE etc.) people have used and got results they are pleased with?

Insights will be appreciated :)
 
Compared with negs, there isnt the depth of detail in 6x4 prints to record.
You have to accept a lower quality of reproduction when scanning small reflective material photos.
 
The original negative will have a much larger dynamic range than the print. Maybe 3-4 times more. You can adjust what part of the negatives image you use when you print the scan. The print is locked. If there is no detail in the highlight then there is no way you can reproduce it. The same goes for the shadows.

Plus the resolution of a print is fairly low. It doesn't need to be high, as it's only going to be viewed with a Mk1 eyeball, so enlarging is going to result in detail loss as well .

If you can stick to negatives, and opt for prints if the orriginal neg does not exist.

200dpi should be ample - approx 1MP - for a 6x4. Try 300dpi if you want but no point going any higher. 24-bit depth more than sufficient too.
 
I never use my scanner on photos any more, i just photograph the photograph. i get better results that way.

I make sure the photo is absolutely flat, have camera set to macro, never use flash as it wipes it out, always in natural light.
I find that an a4 size print is the same quality as the original small photograph that was copied.

Give it a go, you have nothing to lose.:)
 
This was photographed, the original was no bigger than than a passport size, and the quality such as it is, is as good as the original.
i tried scanning it first and the results were terrible when i tried to make it bigger
