photo resizing for online use

Hi all,

I have recently took some photos for family and I would like to send them low res for uploading to facebook etc.

I want them to be low res as I dont want them copied and sent to a highstreet machine for printing and not show the pictures at thier best. I would rather, when they want them printed, for me to get them done at a recommended company.

So how do I resize in photoshop or elements just for low res for the web?

Free software....And it works very well...VSO Image Re-sizer....A quick Google will find it!

In PS just go to image size and change the size of your photos to something like 800px (longest side) and set them all to 72ppi. You can then use the save for web option and set the quality to something like 75% (or what ever the lowest is with out it starting to look bad) and hit save. This will reduce the file size right down and you'll end up with a jpeg about 100kb that looks good on screen but no good to print.

EDIT: There's also the option to covent to sRGB in Save for Web.
 
Setting to 72ppi and saving does nothing at all unless you enable resampling, in which case it changes the pixel size.

Not exactly what i said, i told them to resize the image too.

This is usually checked by default (i think??) If it's not then they will still need to check it as they wouldn't be able to change the pixel size too 800px.
 
for get about 72 ppi it will not chang anything on screen
All you have to do is resize them to say 800 pic wide and when saving so you cant print them set jpg to say 6 and see if still look good this will make printing them harder Also why not put a copyright on them

True, sorry.

What I should have said that with resampling set, resizing to 800px will reduce the quality but then setting the ppi to 72 will just reduce the pixels even further. So you may just as well set the pixel width to a lower value anyway.

So I just need to resize to 800 pixels at widest and forget about ppi size? Then set jpg quality to 6?

PPI only effects image size if you link the two together when changing it. PPI is irrelevant for on screen viewing
 
Your right. It's just built into my head that all my web graphics are created at 72ppi and work for print is 300ppi.

I have added my name to them chaz. Its just when they come to wanting them printed I would rather them ask me to refer them to a good comp rather than a high street machine. That way if the pictures look thier best, others may ask me to do some for them.

for facebook 604px is normally the size to which facebook resizes things..
then you can watermark them with picture shark too if you fancy it
 
I think 800px is a bit big for a web image. I prefer 600px. My friends have even printed the 600px images as 6x4 and they are happy - although they look terrible!!! A watermark will certainly help.
