Does anyone know of a good spot at Heathrow where I can take pictures of planes coming in to land / take off?

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!!

I posted this last year:

I took some photographs at Heathrow at the end of last year and assuming there has been no changes......

" the grass area close to Myrtle Avenue at Heathrow has become perhaps the most popular spot at LHR since the closure of the Queens Building viewing area. The spot is perfectly placed on the approach to runway 27L and when this is the landing runway you can get some good approach shots. The area is also the safest in that you will not be bothered by the police or BAA security."

A good web site to look for more information is :

http://www.plane-mad.com/guides.php?guide=LHR

You can check the time table as to when they will be taking off runway 27L or landing.

There is nearby street parking and the nearest underground station is Hatton Cross and it will be about a ten minute walk from there.

Regards

Hatton Cross tube station?

I keep meaning to get over there and catch a few planes actually.

To be honest though I've hear Heathrow Security are particularly (understandably) arsey about people taking photo's.

I used to live in Harmondsworth as a boy and we used to go to Longford or Sipson or even Colnbrook to watch the planes. The other good spot my Dad used to take us was the A30 heading for Staines.

The Hatton Cross area is the most popular and troublefree. Landings are close. Takeoffs from the other end - 09R - bringing them overhead on liftoff - not so good for the small stuff, but the heavies are fairly close and a telephoto will fill the frame.

But it's no good if the takeoffs are from the Hatton Cross point - 27L. This means landing is on 27R which is quite a walk from Hatton Cross, and on the airport property. I've often seen groups of photographers in the vicinity of 27R for landings and I've seen a police vehicle stopped and giving a group some attention once. But for most of the time they appear to be left alone, for a while at least. One would think that having keen photographers about would be welcomed by the police as a deterrent to undesirables.

The runway schedule on the plane-mad site is obviously only a guide. They can and do switch as required - wind changes etc. For some reason there are never any takeoffs on 09L.

If you're mostly interested in the big stuff - and who isn't - then be prepared for some boredom. In my 2 months residing in the Renaissance hotel with a runway view I did a poll and saw that 7 out of 10 flights are the small Airbuses. zzzzzzzzzzzz.

I was assisting on a shoot at terminal 5 a couple of weeks ago and it was half an hour before anyone approached us to ask what we were doing! And that was carrying around an H3D and huge tripod. Was quite surprised it took so long.
